Finit-e Collaboration
10/03/05
I know you haven’t poste dany of the Finit=e stuff yet, you big slacker, but a friend of mine is going to be contacting you about a book he wants you to do the art on, and I told him that you were probably overbooked as it is, or whatever you want to call it, but he’s got the script and he’s got a publishing arrangement with a small press publisher in Texas. He’s got your email. I don’t know if you’ll have time, but at least talk to him, maybe you can help him out with some sketches or something.
Cool!

TRDL Tribute: Darsion Spectra
10/03/05

This was one of three commission pieces done for Brett Reed, based on his pantheon of creator-owned characters. You can see his various character designs and other commissioned sketches by viewing his ComicArtFans gallery.
Darsion Spectra was hands-down the hardest character of Reed’s that I’ve drawn, no pun intended. The kicker here is dual opposable thumbs, and what that does to the shape of the hand. I really like how her abs and thighs came out, and I’m digging the spacey heeled-boots, too.

At first I wasn’t quite sure how to handle the robotic arms this character wields, being Dock Ock like in appearance, but with dragon-head tips… then I started playing around with the colors and the design tweaks for her costume, and tried to tie the heads to that look. I originally drew her with an antennae hairpiece like the one the dragon heads have, but that wasn’t how he had been showing her, so I digitally removed it for him. I really enjoyed the angle of this sketch, and her general posture.

Updates?

Hey, if you don’t mind me asking? Do you still play your Cyberpunk game? Those rules and all of the equipment and weapons are so cool. I noticed you haven’t updated those sections in a long time, though.
And also, regarding the illustrations in the Comics section, do you post all of the commissions you do, or just certain ones?

Hey Thom,
what tools do you use? I’m always curious what other people use to do their drawings. I like these india ink brushpens I’ve been using for awhile. I can get wide or narrow strokes with the same pen. I also use a lot of Sharpies. But you know I like to make things dark and thick. What do you use? And any specific pencils?

How do you like the illustrations in the TRDL main illustration site? Want to see something drawn that’s so far missing in action? Want to know how something was done? Post about it here. But be nice. I’m an artist, and beneath this pleasant shell is a seething, black core of resentment and rage.
Cheers!

TRDL Tribute: Noble Causes
02/03/05

Edit: This was posted some time ago…
This is possibly the longest commission sketch process I have done to date. The client contacted me over a year ago, to do a sketch based on the, at the time, somewhat new Jay Faerber book, Noble Causes.
She wanted an image of Rusty and Celeste at happier times, well technically, it became this, but originally was to be them fighting each other. We talked a bit about the design for the piece, that she wanted to see Celeste first off, and liked the design of Rusty, so therefore they had to be fighting or having some drama since they were established int he book as a couple on the outs to begin with. However, I thought we could get away with a prequel piece to show them at rest, which was more of the type of pose she’d prefer anyway. So I did the concept pieces and she selected this one… then had to abort the project due to a profession change and timing stuff… then we picked up again about six months ago and worked out the other details… I sent it off and didn’t hear anything for a months, and just assumed she wasn’t keen on the results. As it turns out, she had a baby. So she was understandably a bit distracted.
She liked it just fine, by the way. Glad we stuck with it to get the project finished. I love that simple red costume for Celeste.

Gestalt is an original TRDL character formed of two entities, Claire Quinn, a posthuman, and Behemoth, a creature made from rock, earth and ballast with a molten core. Quinn can summon Behemoth anywhere on the planet, and the creature will literally claw it’s way out of the ground, and up through structures, to reach her. While each of them have latent abilities, Behemoth will only act to protect it’s master from harm, but not perform independent actions. They can form a symbiotic physical merge into a Gestalt form, Quinn being enveloped into a protective mount on Behemoth’s back. In this form, their combined abilities are enhanced, and can act as a single entity. Though it has not been proven, it is believed that prolonged, continuous symbiosis may cause Quinn to lose control of her psychic link with the creature… and if it returns to where it came from she’s screwed.

Claire Quinn can merge with Behemoth by mounting it’s back and becoming enveloped in it’s rocky armor, and in this state, the Gestalt, they can utilize individual powers … Read on for more awesome…

TRDL Tribute: Baroness
02/03/05

This is another piece for the This Week jam on White Paper Demon. I think it might have been my selection, actually, though since the names of character subjects each week are drawn at random, so I can’t remember anymore. But anyway, ZING! ZOWEE! This character helped illuminate my young mind, and nerve endings, to the magical, mystical synthesis of librarian specs and full latex bondage gear… plus weaponry. IronLung knows what I’m talking about. She rocked those G.I. Joes, and she certainly rocked C.O.B.R.A. from within. To this day, when I see librarians or office types or business executives or what have you wearing mousy black glasses and long black hair, I wonder… would she kick my ass, ninja-style, drink my spinal fluid and use my loft to launch a terrorist strike? Well, maybe, but… it’s the Baroness thing.
