This was done for the “Flash” This Week jam.

I drew the current Flash not too long ago, maybe last year, so I wanted to try something a little different. I’m not particularly versed in the whole Flash mythos, other than what I’ve picked up through the general DCU books without following the title regularly, but I’ve always thought, of the “Flash family” that Jesse Quick was a neat character, basically a female Flash with a youthful and competitive spirit. Or at least, she was, back when I was first aware of her, recent events notwithstanding. Anyway, I decided to do a TRDL redesign of Jesse Quick, if she were to take on the mantle of the Flash. I was going for a fun, flirty outfit that expressed that she had long, athletic legs and wasn’t afraid to show them off. I kept a few of the classic Flash details, though i moved them around or reinterpreted them a bit. I hope you like it, as I had a blast doing it…. which was easy, since I was on the sun-soaked shores of the Maya Riviera at the time…

What’s going on in the TRDL studio, you ask? I know you did.

Now that I’m back from my honeymoon and a year’s worth of wedding planning is out of the way, I’m back on the art full-steam… or as full-steam as I can be when drawing is my moonlighting thing. But anyway, here’s what’s happening, briefly:

1. Finit-e Graphic Serial: The first chapter is done: pencils, inks, scanned and ready for color. I’m drawing chapter 2 now. The plan is to stagger the work, so when chapter 3 pencils begin, I start coloring chapter 1, and when chapter 4 is penciling, I post chapter 1, and so on. This way there’s some queued material to share. Additionally, since I have no formal training in full-page coloring, I need time to get my palette worked out for the book. It’s intended to be pretty muted. So, I have been experimenting with the look I want, and I’ll soon know whether I can accomplish it, or if I’ll need the talented hands of a bitchin colorist (ahem, Bob!) to assist. Anyway, progress, all you doubters. Progress!

2. Commissions: I have a current commission queue of 17 images. This may seem like a lot, but don’t be discouraged, if you have a commission you’ve been thinking about. Get in line. I work on several simultaneously, so depending on subject matter and complexity, I can bang through my list pretty quickly. I expect to see the current three I’m doing now out the door by the end of the week.

3. Art Jams/ Personal Images: I have 6 images either penciled or inked, being finished now, most done while in Mexico, and a few from before the wedding, that are for various art groups. I also have 14 TRDL original characters in process, pencils, inks and a few in base colors. It should be obvious, for regular forum readers, that I work on several projects at once. I’m excited about some of these, so i want to get them online soon. Villainy, too!

4. Collaborations: I have 4 collaboartion projects underway, which involve working side by side with another artist, virtually, to produce a combined piece of art. Bob Sparhawk just finished coloring a piece we did for an erotic art group, which I’ll be adding to the Deviant Illustration Vault today, and I have another being colored, and 3 where I’m working with another penciler/inker on a hybrid piece. I love these. And, of course, I’m continuing to work withmy fellow collaborators in our picture this! virtual studio…

5. Design Work: I’m working on logo/mascot design for two clients right now, on a limited basis. I keep this kind of work to a minimum, because there’s lots of production time spent for reasonably small end product, as is the case with most commercial design. But when there’s a good reason to do it, i like to keep my hand in it.

So, you can see I’m kind of bored, nothing to do…

Stay tuned for more TRDL stuff coming soon!

I have to thank Pat at ECC for selecting this character for the group’s latest jam. This is Navis from the French comic Sillage (Navee from Wake, for the English version.)

I had seen this character once or twice in the galleries of European comic novels, but never paid much attention to her before. Man, what was I missing! I love the character design. The simplicity of her form is rock solid, with the continually changing styles and affectations offering variety. And the white tattoo strips, or whatever they are, being the consistent thread with the character, are super hot to me. I became a fan of Phillipe Buchet in the course of researching this character, coming across a number of French galleries of his work. The guy knows his expressive faces and posture, I’ll tell you that.

Anyway, hope you like this piece, as it has another of my rarities for TRDL illustrations (no not nudity… a background!)
