th trdltr trixie TRDL Tribute: Trixie

The topic this week on the This Week Jam on R3 is Trixie, Speed Racer’s racy girlfriend!

It’s no secret I like the monkey best. So sadly, Speed underestimated our pal Chim… to his own chagrin.

Hope you like it!

Here you go, gang:

New Line art coloring in Photoshop:

1) Take line art and make it a RGB file

2) Go to Channels

3) In Channels, copy “Blue” channel by dragging Blue Channel

to the duplicate icon.

4) Invert new Channel (Ctrl – I or Command – I)

5) Go back to layers > Create new layer > name it “Lines” or

something similar. Layer should be transparent.

6) Select new layer and go to SELECT > Load Selection.

7) Pick the Blue Channel copy listed

9) Now create new layers below the “Lines” layer and start coloring.

That’s the basics of the Photoshop tutorial I got off the ‘Net. With this technique, though, your paint bucket tool is pretty much useless. You have to paint large sections with your brush instead of just clicking the paint bucket and filling a character’s face area, for example.

So I’ve added something more to this tutorial that will help increase the use of the paint bucket area in certain sections of your illustration.

###########################################################

10) After step 8, ignore step 9.

11) In your layers, you should only have the “fill layer” you just created. If you have any other layer – say a “background layer” – go ahead and delete them.

12) Now, duplicate the “Fill layer”. You should now have two line layers with a transparent background (checkerboard).

13) Create a new layer and fill it all white.

14) Click the “eye” icon next to one of the “fill layers” – making it invisible.

15) Now, make sure your white layer is at the bottom of your layer set. Your layers may look something like this:

Fill layer (with the eye icon clicked off so it’s invisible)

Fill layer (visible)

White layer (the entire layer … Read on for more awesome…

th trdltr ladydeathr TRDL Tribute: Lady Death [TRDL Redesign]

This was done for the This Week jam.

Lady Death, one of the big, er, guns, of 90′s T&A comics…

I have to be honest, the book was not my bag. But as far as the concept of an undead-esque woman who has traded her soul for eternal life, with a penchant for edged weapons and emasculation of her opponents, I thought I might try something a little more contemporary. I was aiming for the femme fatale at the bar who broadcasts bad news with her gaze. Pretty but with unsavory intentions. So there you go: My TRDL redesign of Lady Death.

Enjoy!

th trdltr helen TRDL Tribute: Helen

This was done for the This Week jam on the R3 Forum.

We’ve had several interesting pieces contributed so far, and what’s been interesting is that everyone who’s made one for the jam has either tried something new, or pushed the boundaries of what we might come to expect from these weekly jams. It’s been a great one so far. For my part, I was thinking about the legend of Troy, and how she is portrayed differently in different interpretations of the myth, depending on the source, either the object of beauty and desire, or a commodity in a matriarchal inheritance system. Either way, in the myth, many Greeks died in her name, and this was the root of my illustration.

Enjoy!

th trdltr cammy TRDL Tribute: Cammy

This was done for the This Week jam on the R3 Forum.

I’ve been neck-deep in wrapping up commissions over the holidays and beginning my 2006 work, so I haven’t had as much time to work on some fun side stuff… but our This Week jam has resumed this week on the R3 Forum, and our character for the week is Cammy from Street Fighter… we’ve already got several contributions, and here’s mine:

Here’s Cammy preparing a ‘Cannon Spike’ super button smashing move.

Jump forward+ QCB (quarter-circle back) + Kick.

And no, I don’t memorize many combos, and certainly not for more than a few hours at a time. I looked it up!

trdlstudio6dh Happy New Year 2006 Update!

Hope you all had a safe and pleasant new years celebration, and that you’re ready to hit the ground running in 2006, because I sure am. Here’s what’s happening at TRDL:

2005 was a busy, busy year for me. I got married to my uberhot Mrs. Bot, managed a solid workload in my day job as an architect, did some traveling, not enough cycling, but lots and lots of drawing. On the TRDL front, 2005 was especially exciting because it saw the closure of my Monkey-Plus-Robot-Reviews entertainment blog (a link still exists in the Robotic Links section) and the opening of the R3 Forum you are reading now. We welcomed 240 members, began hosting the This Week art jam, and became the home of the Picture This! Virtual Studio. I had a number of larger design projects under my Third Rail Design Lab banner, a few of which are still under wraps, and one of which is soon to be announced. And on the commission front, my healthy backlog of work was (hopefully) matched by my efforts to satisfy those clients in a timely fashion. What was missing in 2005? My anticipated publishing benchmark for my graphic serial, Finit-e. To be honest, I just took too many commissions, and with everything else going on, there never were many days to hunker down and work on the project. I did a ton of writing, designing, planning, and drawing on the book, but not enough to meet my goal of launching it on the web. But fuck it, that’s the blessing, and the curse, of self-publishing.

What’s in store for 2006?

Less commissions, I hate to admit, though I’ll still take on the right ones, and from clients who understand the schedule issues. I’m still ahead of the curve, I think, in … Read on for more awesome…
