This is all I could find on the character, so if anyone can come up with some pics, I would appreciate it.

This is Solaris. I’ll warn you now, it’s another weird one. On the face of it, he’s essentially a guy with a sun for a heart, floating around in an alien spacesuit and blasting plasma* at you. But if you read the origin, I actually think he’s one of the more interesting TRDL characters.

*plasma being comic-world plasma, ie. energy blasts of heat and light and cool Kirby dots…

Concept and Art: Thom Chiaramonte
Abilities and Origin: Thom Chiaramonte

:::

Solaris

Name: Pavel Rychagov
Affiliation: Cabal

Attributes:

Melee: 20
Reflex: 30
Muscle: 20
Vigor: 50
Acumen: 30
Observation: 10
Will: 20

Life: 120
Influence: 60

Abilities:

Body Armor: Solaris wears a four-layer presumably-xenobiological insulated armor and containment suit of unknown origin, which he was wearing when he regained consciousness near the moon Io. It is presumed, though not proven, to be alien in origin, and is not removable. It provides resistance to physical attacks [40 AP]. As it becomes damaged, the surface area at the damage points begins to superheat, releasing energy [20 IV] affecting others and objects within 1m or on contact. The suit appears to slowly regenerate at a rate of 5 points per day.

Plasma Generation: Solaris can generate superheated plasma energy [75 DP] through control ports in his gauntlets [20 RV]. His resistance is Unearthly against this specific form of energy [100 AP]. He can create barriers of plasma energy of size approximately equal to his Vigor (50 square meters) which can be sustained for as long as he concentrates.

Flight: Solaris can fly within earth’s atmosphere [30 IV; 30 RV] and in the vacuum of space [75 IV; 75 RV].

Hyper-transportation: though it has only been recorded twice, when Solaris’ Life reaches 25% [30 points] his body appears to be consumed in a flare of plasma energy and disintegrates, only to reform, once again, in the bowels of space (believed to be returning to his original Io orbit) though it has been suggested that if he requires at least 2 turns without sustaining additional damage for this to occur: in both previous cases, he had taken cover and was not directly in combat when the hyper-transportation began, and it was believed to be an involuntary survival mechanism.

Origin:

Solaris first gained, or regained, consciousness, floating prone in orbit around the moon Io, with no memory of how he had come to be there or how it was possible. After orbiting the moon for several more days and acclimating his to his unbelievable circumstances, he used an unexplained familiarity with astronomy to self-locate, and then , once he began to recognize constellations and his general location within the solar system, and once oriented in earth’s direction, he felt a strong subliminal pull and began to fly in the direction that would eventually, over the course of several years of travel, prove to lead him , not only to earth, but specifically to Moscow. Though his presence in the former capital of the Soviet Union created panic and chaos, in short time he realized he recognized many landmarks and regional geographical features, though much of the built environment had changed. After exploring Moscow over three days, surrounded at a distance by a battalion of the Russian military as the civilian population was evacuated (seen around the world on global network news and at the time believed to be of alien origin) he came to realize, or believe, that he was Pavel Rychagov, the former commander of the Soviet Air Command during the Second World War and ranking member of Stalin’s Politburo before his fall from grace and execution for treason by the NKVD. How he was spared from death, and had not suffered weakness of physical and mental endurance indicating aging, nor how he came to regain consciousness near Io, and not require food or rest, remained a mystery. Additionally, though not proven, he believed his physical form to be containing the core of an infant star.

While his initial appearance on earth was met with great interest and sensational media obsession as an alien visitor, his attempts to communicate with Russian leaders and explain himself to be the reincarnated spirit of a generations-gone military leader, troubled the Russian government and the military attempted to execute him (again) in Red Square, in an unfortunate attack that left thousands of Russian soldiers dead. He was eventually defeated by the American armored hero 21st Sentry, and disappeared. He resurfaced several years later and attacked Washington DC, where he engaged battle with Kiloton, who would later be a founding member of the crisis response team Rampart. The battle lasted three days and spanned several thousand miles across the Atlantic Ocean, before he was finally defeated and again disappeared. He has not been seen since.

This week’s character topic in the This Week Jam, chosen at random, was Phil Foglio’s Agatha Clay, from his webcomic, Girl Genius. I hadn’t been aware of Foglio’s current work until researching the character for this jam, and was surprised at the sheer volume of pages available on the Girl Genius site, as well as a wealth of character information and other resources. It’s great to see an industry guy taking control of his own distribution and doing his own thing his way.

Anyway, TRDL’s Joao and I decided to work collaboratively on this piece. He did the roughs, I did the pencils, he inked them, and then I colored it up. We worked pretty quickly to get all of the back and forth done in time for the close of the jam, and it was, as always, an inspirational and enjoyable collaborative experience.

Hey, Boss-Bot:

Do you still play/run the Cyberpunk stuff? Or other stuff?

I have perused your Dystopia section a bit. I am ashamed to say I ahve not read everything. I will get around to it. I still do game/run. Although, I mostly stick to “world hopping”. The major game I run right now is based on a Fantasy Melting pot World called Trin.

Any other gamers out there?

The character for the week for the This Week Jam was Saturn Girl of the long-running DC series, Legion [of Super Heroes.]

I’m well-known for being a Marvel zombie. Of the more impenetrable DC properties to my young eyes, LoSH was high on the list. The costumes, the NAMES, Superboy involvement, the wacky dates, super heroes in space… it all seemed a little obtuse to me. Not that I batted an eye at the Starjammers in X-Men, but hey, who said anything about being rational about it. Now, of course, I see them totally differently, as this previously untapped resource for drawing subjects. And I appreciate the DC fanbase that we have on the R3 Forum, who followed LoSH the way I’m more familiar with people following X-Men and similar pantheon books. So these are some of my favorite jams, purely from an unfamiliarity standpoint.

The most inspirational aspect of this jam for me was the costume choices… so many variants over the years, from the spacey bodysuits to the old school miniskirts and more. I chose to use the costume designed for the upcoming Legion animated series in development.

Ok, I’m not sure if this is the right place for this topic, in which case, apologies, Thom.

Before, there’s any misunderstanding, my questions are not concerned with entering in Diamond/ DSM arena; I am not looking into the Jeff Smith/Dave Sim model – that’s not what I’m looking for here.

Basically, I have a script for a one-shot graphic novel I want to draw as soon as my current projects are done. I want to have it printed and sold through my site. Since I assume I won’t be making money from it, one could call it a vanity press thing, although I’m not interested in losing money either – All I want is just having a neat black and white book with colour covers, preferably with no ads, done by me that I can hold on my hands and sell to whoever wants it, thus having its costs covered. I want it to look good too, not a home-printed and stappled aspect, but a genuine paperback.

Anyone knows what are the best deals in terms of quality/prices available from printers?

Anyone has had any experiences/advise that wants to share concerning such subject?

What sort of investment does a thing like this require?

All help/advise is welcome.
