So for those who are participating. No fears, you have a month to get something together. Next Jam will be announced on the 1st of September.

So far, only Thom and Joao (memory serving) have announced their intentions.

The fun bit will be comicng up with an idea between you both and deciding who will be doing what. One pencilling, another inking…one doing the concept and the other finishing it. Both taking a diferent character in the same scene, how you organise your working together is up to you. So long as it is colaborative.

I’m going to be intreagued to see what sort of scenarios folk put these two characters in!

Good luck and have fun.

-Darren

Heya

On the urging of my wifebot(tm), and friend Twowingsmambo, and assorted Friends of Robot on the forum that have inquired if all I do is superhero stuf, and if it always looked like this…

…I’ve finally gotten around to digging out drawings and junk that hasn’t really fit the TRDL brand, per se, but I consider formative. I peak behind the TRDL curtain… I’ll post a bit here and there as I scan it. Some, like today’s, will be sketches done for amusement. Others will be my earlier comic art from childhood. Still others will be autiobiographical illustration.

So, for those with an interest… read on!

:::

The first item I have for you from the Vault is MOJO.

In college, I worked at a rental company… one half heavy construction equipment, one half bridal rentals (makes perfect sense, I know) and if not for Friend of Robot Muadib, I’d have probably gone insane. Anyway, as if this matter/antimatter clash wasn’t difficult enough (greasy fingerprints on the showroom linens, hysterical brides staggering in mules around the back lot in search of our wedding chairs, but stumbling into a decommissioned ride-on tiller being disemboweled) we had a curious problem in the dishroom. Whoever we had doing dishes (they come back from the wedding events dirty, we washed and nuked them into semi-cleanliness) would eventually wig out, have some sort of psychotic break, and either quit… or just flee. EVERY one.

We got to joshin’ about it, Muadib and I, and determined that there was some sort of unseen gremlin in there, smearing grime on previously cleaned glassware, hitting the ground-fault on the steamer, stealing the plastic bags, shattering all the champagne flutes, etc. This critter became eventually known as Mojo, and this wes an illustration I did one day, and hung it in the dishroom with the logic that his power over the dishroom guy only existed, because he was neither named, or seen. By doing both, his power would be defeated, and the damn forks would get washed right.

What else –could- we call it other than “This Month!”

Waaaaay back when I started “This Week!” and it was being hosted on the Yahoo Message Boards I wondered about a second Jam. I never got around to pushing it until recently in discussion with Thom.

We were both aware that we did not want to steal away any attention from the “This Week!” Jam.

I felt that a monthly Jam would allow us the opportunity to work with one another. Say for the sake of an example, I PM’d Cary and asked if he had teamed up with anyone. He confirmed that he hadn’t and so one of us posts into the thread, Cary and Darren. Just out of courtesy so Cary doesn’t get pestered with a million emails throughout the month.

Then between us we can work out who’s doing what part of the process and discuss what we think our angle might be for the selected characters.

I had been thinking that this seemed a natural progression from “This Week” which is primarily a solitary gig. This way we can all exercise some new muscles.

My mind is already salivating at the possible team-ups!

This Jam will hold true to the philosophy of the “This Week” Jam where you can contribute as much or as little as you can manage, no pressure.

If everyone would care to email me with a list of characters that I can organise in readiness for the end of this month.

Everyone should send five choices and ONE “Wildcard”. Label your Wildcard as such. Try and be as wild with the Wildcard as you can.

I look forward to teaming up with all of you.

-Darren

Welcome to the first R3 Designer Jam!

This was originally scheduled for June 06 but we got distracted. Now that Jon Fauvreau’s Iron Man film project is finally off the ground, the timing couldn’t be better. Your task: Design your own Iron Man armor!

It can look like one of Stark’s designs, or be totally unrecognizable as a completely new re-imagining of the concept of single-occupant powered-armor.

Your choice!

This one’s obviously close to my heart, as I’ve been designing IMs since I was a tot, and as we go, I’ll try and dig out some of those designs as well.

Here’s a collection of previous armors to spark your imagination:

And here’s a gallery from Advanced Iron, the zine I have done some work for: http://www.advancediron.org/armory.php

Have at it!

Change is good! The R3 Designer Jam is one of two new jams you’ll be seeing in the coming days, offering members an opportunity to branch out from the This Week jam and try something a little different, with a less hectic pace.

The concept behind the R3 Designer Jam is to give participants an opportunity to develop their takes on comic design… the jam will run for several weeks at a time, so there’s plenty of time to get into the action. It’s all about putting YOU in the designer role. Design your own character, and watch the R3 community draw their versions of it! Select a super-team from the comics, and have everyone draw their own re-casting of the line-up. Create a what-if? scenario, re-imagining a classic character in a new context. Anything goes!

Interested parties need not be artists. Anyone can participate. Just send me a PM with your request or idea, and I’ll add it to the pot.

Design away, my robots…

As with This Week, the subject matter will be ganweral-audience themed, to a point. We’ll make this one R rated, but not X rated, so you have some extra room, within reason. Let me know if you have any questions!

Edited: Here’s the method:

1. select some ideas for R3 Designer Jams- PM or email me

2. when the jam is announced, draw like you stole something

3. post your finished piece, as well as any WIPs, roughs, pencil sketches, concepts, anything that speaks to your process. You can do WIPs and post them as you go, or add them AFTER your finished piece, as I like to do.

Go!

This piece was done as a gift to the Commission Arts Central Yahoo Group. We created a poll to see which of the ’52′ characters the members wanted to see in the Yahoo Group’s main page illustration. Though several characters received votes, Power Girl was first and Booster a moderate second, and I decided to include both and take Booster down a notch. He seems like a guy who would be threatened by Power Girl…

This was a commission celebrating the client’s love of ole Shellhead and his many foes. We chose to use the Silver Centurion armor for a little variety, and most of the villains’ costumes are more or less representative of that time period in continuity. This was originally designed to be a larger image, and in full size it’s 18 x 24 but I created a smaller version for sharing. Iron Man was always my favorite character growing up, and this was the first time in years I got to draw some of his rogues gallery. My favorite detail are the pulse bolt burns on Titanium Man’s chestplate…

This was done for a longtime client of mine, Pinapoe, who has several pieces of fanfic under his belt. The subject of this commission is the Silver Samurai, longtime X-Men foe and Yakuza warlord who, in recent convoluted continuity, either is or isn’t in cahoots with Viper and the Hand.

Anyway, the client’s desire was for us to see Samurai despondent and in aguish, his business clothes and elements of armor discarded around him, his daito shattered and his shoto (short sword) before him. The client wanted to see him displaying all manner of gangland Yakuza ink, and this was what made this one so fun. My first pass at the character’s tattoos used more of an international collection of ink styles, and Pinapoe wanted to see more traditional Japanese tats, so I did a second version continuing the theme of his right arm’s ink work. I also did two versions of the finished piece, both dawn/sunset/long-shadow, and a twilight, darker version.
