TRDL Tribute: Diabolik
25/08/06

I had this one inked and scanned when my Alienware ate itself, so it’s been languishing, waiting for some color. I thought the Diabolik costume was actually kind of challenging, given that it’s a thin, skintight bodysuit that inexplicably reveals his facial features… I suppose not much different than the superheroine spandex that inexplicably omits genitalia detail in today’s comics… anyway, whatever the explanation, Diabolik is a fly character, and this was a fun one to do. The lost, unpublished last issue of Diabolik!

TRDL Tribute: Black Panther
25/08/06

This is another This Week Jam piece I posted to the jam thread, but just now have added it to the main site. The character: Marvel’s Black Panther.
I was delighted by this character selection for a number of reasons: I had never drawn T’Challa before, LOVED his classic clawed costume, and thought he’s been getting some pretty decent coverage at Marvel lately, what with his wedding to ultra-desirable bachelorette Ororo Munroe, and later, getting a great scene in Civil War. So, that was my inspiration. Compositionally, it’s probably my favorite piece of my personal work.

TRDL Tribute: Doctor Doom
25/08/06

A week or so back, our character for the This Week Jam was Doctor Doom, nemesis of the Fantastic Four and all-around Marvel Villain. I did this piece at the time, but only now have been able to restore data from a crashed machine, in order to post this officially to the main illustration site. I had originally shown Victor Von Doom blaming Mike Zeck for his Secret War redesign misfortunes, but R3 Member Vlad pointed out that Jim Shooter was personally driving much of what was going on in the title, so Doom, being a smart guy (though frequently irrational in his lust for vengeance: I mean, Ben Grimm’s his number one enemy because he… humiliated Doom by hurting him in their first encounter?!?) revised his statement.

This was done for our This Week Jam.. an experiment for me…
I haven’t really done much in the way of digital animation, so when i got the idea for this piece, I decided I’d give it a go. The original scheme involved the view THROUGH a massive head hole to see Larry beyond, but after I drew it up, I decided against it. I wanted the head to block your view of Larry until he is slowly revealed, and a yar exit hole would defeat the purpose, plus make Larry to small in order to get that composition right. And let’s say he shot up, rococheted to the foreground, ricocheted again and got me from the front, OK? Ha

DD’s press release:
Riding on the success of a Hollywood agreement to bring comic book property HACK/SLASH to the silver screen, Chicago comic book powerhouse Devil’s Due Publishing, Inc. unveils its next two projects in development, DRAFTED and MERCY SPARX…and announces a talent search to find illustrators for the exciting, upcoming series.
“The triumph of HACK/SLASH has really opened the doors to homegrown projects like DRAFTED and MERCY SPARX,” says Devil’s Due President Josh Blaylock (G.I. JOE, HOW TO SELF-PUBLISH COMICS). “And what better way to launch an exciting, unknown property than with fresh new talent?”
ABOUT THE PROJECTS –
• MERCY SPARX, Blaylock’s own creation, tells the tale of a devil girl stuck between Heaven and Hell. After being denied entrance into paradise, Mercy is contracted by Heaven to hunt down three rogue angels who are giving the rest a bad name. Succeeding in their capture might just be Mercy’s key to the Pearly Gates.
• When a benevolent alien race arrives on Earth, informing the people of the world that they must be recruited into an intergalactic war or be destroyed by invaders, will humanity rise to the challenge? DRAFTED, created by Mark Powers (AFTERMATH, X-MEN) and Josh Blaylock, follows a young man named Gabriel Contreras as the entire world changes around him, and he is led down the path of heroism and sacrifice. Will Earth survive the war to come?
“We’re only looking for artists in for the long haul,” Blaylock adds. “We want the best and brightest artists, ready to break into the professional comic book industry, capable of keeping up both brisk pacing and consistent art quality. But we also need artists excited over the material. If you’re submitting to our talent search, make sure to choose the concept that you would most enjoy illustrating.”… Read on for more awesome…

Internet friends and fellow artist. I’m gonna do a little ranting.
It seems i’ve been called a hack on another website for my Ironman sketch’s because the first looks too much like Shirow’s character from appleseed and the second looks too much like the robots from I robot. It didn’t matter that when i posted the pieces that i said they were inspired by those works and it was my intention to make them look like them. Yet certain section of the internet morons insist on saying i’m not being original i’m just taking someone else’s drawings. Even I say it is my intention to make it look like them these intellectually challanged misfits insist on continueing to mis the point. They even envoke LIefeld’s drawings as excuses for being a hack.
I find it frustrating that they can’t read that i say I was working off of established ideas . They insist change this change that. Most of them who offer this advice their own artwork looks like they have never even attempted to learn how to do it correctly nor wish to invest the time. Hell I even posted The Ironman I did last year that Matt Carpenter colored as proof that hey i could do an original design if that was my intention. Still they refused to except what i say and continue seeing what they only want to see. I can imagine how artist like Byrne must feel when he gets this crap done to him a hundred times more then i do.
