Joao and I have cooked up another collaborative piece to celebrate Halloween this year. You will find an image attached above. It involves a damsel or two in distress, and plenty of creepy crawlies…
Since this is another con-fused collaboration, where our individual components are interwoven together digitally, the breakdown is kind of complicated. I’ll explain who did what after most of you have had a chance to look at it!
You can see this illustration herein the TRDL Tribute Gallery.

This is Jungle, a member of the Intruders, TRDL’s latest posthuman team.
Concept, Design and Art: Joao Marques
Background: Thom Chiaramonte and Joao Marques
:::
Jungle
Name: Paul Sisulu
Affiliation: The Intruders
TRDL Carbon RPG Stats:
Melee: 50
Reflex: 40
Muscle: 30
Vigor: 30
Acumen: 10
Observation: 20
Will: 30
Life: 150
Influence: 60
Abilities:
Jungle’s enhanced abilities are of unknown origin. He demonstrates significantly higher agility and endurance levels than a normal human, and his strength, senses and resistance to injury are clearly posthuman attributes. However, he has never spoken of his past before working at the Kreuger Park, and no public records appear to confirm his mere existence before that time. It is believed that he is the product of one of the private posthuman engineering programs, but no further information has surfaced. Jungle’s enhanced physiology is reflected in the Attributes above.
Hypersensitivity: Jungle’s vision, hearing and olfactory sense are all dramatically more sensitive than a normal human, manifesting in night vision and auditory or olfactory feats at +3CS to Observation rolls.
Berzerker Rage: Rarely exhibited, Jungle has been witnessed entering a bezerker state during periods of extreme psychological and physical distress [if more than one half of Jungle's Life is reduced in a single round, or if he fails an Acumen Save as a result of emotional distress] causing a boost of his Reflex, Power and Vigor by +2CS for 1d10 rounds, with a reduction of Acumen and Will by +3CS. During the rage, he also experiences +3CS towards Stun/Shock Saves, and can continue fighting despite prohibitive physical damage. After the rage subsides, he lapses into a near-catatonic, unresponsive state for 8-12 hours.
Reflexive Boost: At the onset of a melee, Jungle may take two actions per round, for 1-6 rounds, unless successfully ambushed.

Update:
Now that we have been doing this for over a year, most regular R3 members should be familiar with TRDL Fridays, but for those new to the forum, Joao and I post new official TRDL published content each friday.
That means new TRDL characters, stories, projects, etc. This is in addition to other non-TRDL Universe content that we may release on other days. But Friday is the day we add to the public record of the TRDL Universe. Of course, the deifnition of Friday is kind of loose in this international cross-global design lab, so it could be Thursday night or Saturday morning, depending on where in the world you are. But all the same, we hope you’ll dig it.
We will, as always, be posting the new TRDL content to the Third Rail Design Lab illustration site about a week before we share it out on the supernet, so look to the site directly, or the announcement here in this section of the R3 Forum, for the latest stuff.
Thanks for looking!
Thom and Joao

Backing up the backup
23/10/06
I need a little input guys and girls.
I have been using an external hd to save all my graphics on but realized today that I am setting myself up for major heartache if the thing ever crashes. I was in a panic today because my finder crashed and was showing me that there were files there but I had no visibiltiy of them. All my folders on the maxtor were showing 0 bites. I was afraid that I had lost my accesses even though the drive showed that there was 45 gb available for use.
First thing I am going to do is put everything back on the computer and use the external for what it is….a backup. It will be easier access anyway even if it will make the antivirus take a freaking week to fully scan my files.
Questions:
What do you use for backups? Strictly DVD or external hd or an online cache?
How often do you back up?
And the biggest question of all What do you backup?
Discuss please.

Well, those of you using Photoshop CS2 ont he PC have surely noticed (or flipped out and killed the whole villagem if you were me) that with CS2 Adobe slyly disabled File Explorer preview support, in a dodgy effort to coerce you into using Adobe Bridge. I’ve been looking, off and on, for months for a method to correct this grievance, as reliant as I am on File Explorer for file management these days (I used to always use ACDSee for such things, but it won’t install on my current system for whatever reason…!)
This patch was furnished in a Photoshop support forum, and I researched it for awhile before risking it. It DOES involve two scripted registry changes. But I’ve finally tried it and it DOES work. Mileage may vary, but I’m one happy robot over here.
http://rapidshare.de/files/26594989/Sho … PS_CS2.zip
That’s a Rapidhare link to the zip that includes two dlls and two registry edits.
Save the dlls to C/Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Shell
and run the two scripts, and you’re done.
Al alternative, for those shy of running mysterious scripts on their registry (ha) is to install an onlder version of Photoshop tandem to CS2… which accomplishes the same thing.

Here’s the first member of the Intruders to be featured: Material Girl!
Rebecca Modern, the beautiful Material Girl, is a member of the rogue posthuman team The Intruders, unique in their era for being the first major group to exist without corporate or nation-state backing and without a sponsored agenda. Her posthuman ability involves complete shapeshifting control, including elemental manipulation. She can take on any form she can imagine, include mass-shifting to larger or smaller forms as needed to a reasonable degree, and can transmute parts of her form into different states of matter, and different elements, with a high degree of precision. She is arguably the team’s most powerful member, and only her lack of significant martial arts or combat training, and power-specific offensive technique limit her potential as a combatant. Her focus is defensive and problem-solving methods, and her experimentation with her abilities have remained consistent with that goal. Her experience with image manipulation is considerable, however.

TRDL Tribute: Runaways
18/10/06

Heya,
This fine illo was done by Joao for the This Week Jam. Everyone’s here, except for Alex Wilder. Chase is in the LeapFrog. In fact, if I had to choose a favorite detail on this one, it’d be Joao’s rendition of the LeapFrog itself. I was commiserating to him earlier that the design for that vehicle was Adrian Alphona’s weakest part of the otherwise astounding Runaways material: it wants to be rounded, more like a Fuchikoma n my mind… I didn’t like how Alphona created the thing so hard edged and blocky. But nonetheless, he still rocked it well… and I think our man from Portugal rocked it one better. Great expression! Now, excuse me while I go find out how he did Karolina’s psychedelic light effects…

I will be the first to admit that I have issues in my work when it comes to proportion, particularly at odd drawing angles (the drawing, not my seating position, though, actually, that too) so what I offer here is a cheat sheet for your use, hopefully seeing MORE action than mine do. I printed these out and have them in the cover of my sketchbook, so I can reference them when I need to. I don’t often enough, but I’m trying to be good about it.
There are one million how-to-draw guides from one million books and authors… this one I just happened to like for it’s immediacy and simplicity, of all of my books in my TRDL library. I’ll have to dig up the source info to give the artist credit, and understand that you should immediately go out and buy this book (actually, if memory serves, it’s WAY out of print, so you’re OK to use these, I’d say)…
Anyway, hope these will be of some use to you!
These are larger scans, so you can save and print them…

The Rake
Name: The Rake [true name unknown]
Affiliation: n/a
Melee: 50
Reflex: 30
Muscle: 20
Vigor: 30
Acumen: 20
Observation: 20
Will: 10
Life: 130
Influence: 50
Abilities:
Fighting Style: Frustrating the authorities to no end, the rake is actually not a posthuman at all. He has trained, and is proficient in, a number of fighting styles, contributing to his attribute stats above. He almost always uses an edged weapon, either a rapier or smallsword, which deliver edged damage [15 DP]. On a critical (Orange) Actions, he may decapitate or otherwise ceremoniously dispatch his victim in one attack, by making a subsequent Red Action against his Reflex.
Origin:
Notorious throughout the EU, the man known only as The Rake became infamous overnight after crashing a fundraiser gala in Lucerne featuring some of Europe’s wealthiest society families, raising funds for the Continental Wellness Initiative, a well-intentioned but entirely corrupt charity that had distributed nearly no donations to it’s recipients, yet squandered billions of euros in parties, events, and galas of the sort. Before a stunned black tie crowd, he brought down a massive crystal chandelier, launched himself before the fund’s executor, Sir Blime Fortwell of Leanbury, and verbally assaulted him for corruption, grift, infidelity, collusion, bribery, theft and arrogance, and then promptly decapitated him. After brazenly groping a young duchess, then leaping through a stained glass window, the authorities, of which the leaders were in attendance, learned that the funds considerable holdings had been liquidated by … Read on for more awesome…

TRDL Update – Dawnstar
11/10/06

Heya,
This was done for the now-defunct character jam on Comerotica. This is Dawnstar, of the Legion of Super-Heroes. I’ve had to do one too many winged characters recently, it seems, so this was a bear! But she was a neat character to draw, and I was going for some semblance of a Native American vibe in her facial features. I hope you like it!

Enjoy!
