TRDL Tribute – Typhoid Mary
21/04/07

This was done for the This Week Jam, the subject being the Daredevil villain, Typhoid Mary.
I was working on the roughs for a commission for R3 member TwistedLyn, and decided to go a different direction. Then, I was looking at the design I had been working on, with twin giant ponytails and a catholic school skirt gone savage, and decided it could make for a decent Typhoid Mary redesign, and went from there. I like some of the details in this piece, but man, it’s hard getting two people to tussle and not obscure the view of the one facing the camera. Anyway, enjoy!

A bunch of you have probably heard of this, but I bet a bunch haven’t, so I’m sharing.
The first step in 95% of the digital comic-coloring methods out there is flatting the colors.
Some brainy-type people have invented a pair of filters that flat the colors for you.
Plug in your line art, it randomly colors it, running the colors well under the linework, and then all you need is the paint-bucket set with tolerance of zero to assign the colors you want to the areas.
Here are the filters:

Here’s a walkthrough of coloring a page using the filters a buddy of mine did:
http://dryponder.livejournal.com/115463.html
If you’ve got a style with a nice holding line, these filters will work like magic. If like me you’ve got a ton of hatching, and lots of lost-and-found linework, they’re less magical. But still meaningfully time-saving. I’ve been using and loving them on a series of illos with a tight deadline. I’ve modified my normal inking style to include a full holding-line on everything for this, but have a plan to get the best of both worlds with only a touch extra work in future illos.

Dante is a posthuman criminal operating in the greater Melbourne area, and a frequent antagonist of the Australian/New Zealand regional posthuman defense team, Alchera.

IdCasting: Dante’s brain chemistry was permanently mutated from close exposure to The Player’s dormant posthuman gene catalyzing aura. His unique physiological make-up was susceptible to rapid change as a result of this exposure, and the strain of the activation of massive amounts of tissue in his cerebral cortex caused permanent brain damage, rendering him psychotic. His extreme, violent urges manifest in a form of subliminal reality manipulation, which causes his sub-conscious to generate physical images of creatures from the recesses of his imagination. They are generally bound to his will, but rapidly replicate, and act with a mischievous, violent bloodlust. There is no recorded limit to the quantity of these ‘parademons’ that Dante can manifest, and because they self-replicate, the effect on his mental state as a result of their sustained existence is not known. However, the longer they exist, and the greater the number, Dante will begin to struggle to control them, and grow psychologically impaired.
Dante can generate parademons with a simple Yellow Ability Action [40 IV] and they will auto-replicate at a number of one half his Ability Intensity multiplied by every ten rounds of the use of his Ability. Therefore, he may initially create 20 parademons, and ten rounds later, 40 more will appear, and so on. The parademons attack with edged damage [20 IV] from tooth and claw strikes, and each can sustain 10 points of damage before being destroyed, only … Read on for more awesome…

I though this was an excellent piece on the PROPER use of photo refs in comic art, at least in my opinion. I know it’s a dodgy topic. You have Greg Land on one side of the equation, tracing models, and people like me, unfortunately, in the other corner, not using ENOUGH photo refs so our work is weaker as a result… Immonen suggests a healthy middle ground.
Take a read:

And then, dive into the poll below (whewwww a poll!) and then reply, telling us how much you use photo refs, model refs, etc and how it helps, or hurts your process. i think it could be an interesting discussion…

TRDL Tribute – The Invincible Gang
01/04/07

This piece was done for the This Week Jam, the character being Robert Kirkman’s Invincible.
For me, personally, half the fun of Kirkman’s book are the supporting characters. I had to squeeze in two of my favorite characters EVER: Atom Eve and Robot. For some reason, this illustration took a LOT of time. But I’m glad I did it. As always, Atom Eve was the most enjoyable part…
