TRDL Tribute – Bullet Witch
27/05/07

This piece was done for the This Week Jam, the character being the videogame heroine Bullet Witch.
So, I hadn’t heard of this one before, and soon found out why. Among the gaming circles, Bullet Witch gained the less than ideal reputation as the most-modded game no one wanted to play. Loosely thrown together from a mish-mash of Half-Life, Deus Ex, Bloodrayne, Final Fantasy, you name it, the game was supposed to be a hit: after all, the main character was an exotically designed female, frequently providing upskirt views, wielding a giant gun seemingly born from a Stoner rifle, a broom, a quiver and maybe some gold bullion. Who knew that the game would fall flat, thanks to derivative storytelling, uninspired levels, and floating brains? But the developers quickly countered by releasing multiple costume packs, assuming, understandably, that given the chance to dress the character in a schoolgirl uniform, a sexy secretary costume, a futuristic warrior… even a, uh, mummy, would spark gamer interest in the title. It didn’t.
Anyway, I thought the character design of the basic Bullet Witch model was pretty cool. I thought the weapon was pretty inspired in that giant, ungainly, impossible to use way that seems so popular in overseas-derived titles like this. Her gothic-meets-cyberpunk costume was neat, and I really like a lot of the detail choices. I chose to draw one of the basic looks for the character, not the extra costume packs. The resting on calves pose is kind of tough to pull off without refs, and I did my best with it. Ironically, I probably had more fun doing the illustration than most players had playing the game itself.
Hope you like her!

This piece was done for the R3 Designer Jam, the challenge being to design a female version of G.I.Joe’s Snake-Eyes.
I’m pretty sure like 99.99999% of kids liked Snake-Eyes best. I mean, while most of the G.I.Joe line, as it was, at least, in the early few years of the 4″ figure variety, based on an abstract assortment of largely drab military imagery and styles conjured during a period in the US when we weren’t actively, overtly in a major armed conflict, here was the ONE guy among the heroes with the mystery of a masked face, the darkness of a bad ass ninja, the slick design of a commando, and the coolest weapon accessories. Sort of unfair to the other Joes, except for maybe Scarlett, who had the benefit of being the hotty female fighter towards which a generation of kids directed their near-pubescent energies, given a slight advantage over the other female Joes because of her primary red hair. Yep, Snake-Eyes was the rad Joe, and even grown older, I never shook the preference for him, his mute awesomeness, and his clear Scarlett-rocking ways.
This R3 Designer Jam challenge was to redesign Snake-Eyes as a woman, so I imagined a new Snake-Eyes, fighting for vengeance after the death of the original, at the hands of, I don’t know, Baron Bludd or someone. It’s Scarlett, wearing Snake-Eyes’ kit. Those Cobra soldiers below? Soon to be filling stylish King Cobra-shaped black lacquered caskets in Myanmar, or wherever Cobra sends their dead mercs for eternal slumber.
Hope you like her!

Mettle is a Canadian posthuman who migrated to NYC to become a street-level vigilante, fighting crime with frequently lethal, if spirited, intensity.
:::
Mettle
Name: Monica Moon
Affiliation: n/a
Abilities:
Subdermal Armor: Mettle’s latent posthuman ability is a permanent, semi-rigid layer of hardened cells below her third epithelial layer. These cells exhibit bio-inorganic fusion properties, regrowing and processing oxygen like any other cell, but with distinctly inorganic, metallic molecular characteristics. This ‘living metal’ can be damaged, and repaired, by Mettle’s own immune system, and shifts and conforms to her muscular and tendon movements as if it were part of her skin. In normal conditions, the unique properties of this subdermal armor are not visible to the naked eye, but her body feels rigid and cold to the touch. As she takes damage, the subdermal armor may become exposed, and it’s visual appearance is a dark rust color, largely a by-product of a mixture of blood and oxygenated cellular material. The subdermal armor provides resistance to damage from physical and energy attacks equivalent to an Armor of 50, though appears susceptible to acid and is less effective against damage from extreme temperature and incendiary weapons (AP reduced to 20 for these attacks). It should be noted that Mettle’s unique nervous system does extend to her epithelial layers through the armor membrane, so she feels the pain of damage to her skin, as well as any internal injury, and must make a Vigor Save in the event damage passes through her subdermal armor and reduces her Life, or become overwhelmed with pain in the form of a Stun for 1-4 rounds. While she has suffered internal injuries from some attacks, she has never sustained injury such that her subdermal layer has been visibly breached, and X-rays and attempts to study her body … Read on for more awesome…

TRDL Tribute – Gwen Stacy
17/05/07

This piece was done for the This Week Jam, the character being Spider-Man’s Gwen Stacy.
I’ve always had a thing for Gwen Stacy, and it’s hard to parse exactly why. I’m not much for blondes, personally, but there was something about the specter of that gorgeous OTHER woman, that girl who catches Pete’s eye, the tragic figure. Maybe it taps into fantasies of meeting someone very different, aesthetically at least, from the women I dated when I was single, or maybe it was the tug of melancholy over relationships past or lost, when thinking about the tragic death of this character. Not sure. But i always liked the IDEA of her, not just as a love interest for Pete, but as a GREAT example of applying a little real-world consequence to all those marvel super-heroics. Recently, re-reading a digital copy of her death issue, I was struck that Spider-Man was even cracking self-confident gags WHILE breaking her neck. Shudder. Talk about a therapy-trigger!
Anyway, for this piece, I chose to reinterpret her just slightly. I think it should still read as Gwen, with the colorway and the headband, but instead of going for that 60s mod Gwen that i always enjoyed, I tried to imagine the concept of her in a contemporary setting, sort of like my TRDL version of an Ultimate Gwen (without all that Ultimate continuity!) and for my money, to hell with clubs, bars, mile high clubs and what not, the hottest girl you are going to find, bar none, is the CAFE GIRL. The eye contact with a total stranger, casually taking a brief break to enjoy a latte or whatever, before moving on to her mysterious life…
So that’s my Cafe Gwen!

Scorpia is a member of the Bad Seeds, and is most famous for her cross-team relationship.

Scorpia
Name: Dana Janine Marhsall
Affiliation: The Bad Seeds
Attributes:
Melee: 45
Reflex: 35
Muscle: 25
Vigor: 20
Acumen: 20
Observation: 25
Will: 30
Life: 125
Influence: 75
Abilities:
Bio-Mutation: Prehensile Tail: Scorpia’s latent posthuman ability was the bio-graft of cellular material that was engineered into a 3m tail, which she can control as if it were any other limb. The tail has been grafted with an armored sheath to give it greater resistance to physical damage, beyond the general level of resistance her posthuman treatments granted her entire body (while Scorpia is resistant to physical and energy attacks with an effective Armor of 20, the tail itself is physically armored to 55 AP). The tip of Scorpia’s tale has been fitted with a blade which can be used as an edged weapon, and can administer a debilitating electrical shock. Attacks are made as melee strikes, and the blade causes 35 DP and halves physical Body Armor. A successful strike delivers a charge that requires the victim to make a Yellow Vigor Save or be stunned for 2 rounds. If that attack causes damage through the victim’s armor, then the Save must yield an Orange Cell and the duration will extend to 1d6 rounds. Scorpia may also use her tail to Parry or Grapple with a +2CS Melee bonus. If she Grapples an opponent, she may deliver 30 points of crushing damage per round.

Dana Janine Marshall was the lover and partner of the Bad Seeds’ leader, Sabot. She did not undergo posthuman development initially, despite her interest in joining her lover in battle as part of the Bad Seeds confrontation team, because of an unplanned pregnancy. … Read on for more awesome…

How to create my own digital "zip"
13/05/07
I often get asked how I create digital shading patterns in my art. It’s a pretty easy process in Photoshop.
I open a new file and fill it with black.
Next I reduce the opacity to grey tone (play around with the opacity). After that I
change the mode from Grayscale to Bitmap, choose Halftone screen from the drop down menu and enter frequency and angle. Once I have the layered placed, I mask out the areas I don’t want to see and whola. Works pretty well.
For a gradient, start out with a graded area instead of solid black

Arclight is the first posthuman security agent to be not only produced by the newly-privatized PDI lab in Newfoundland, but to defend it against invasion attempts by both posthuman and traditional forces, as part of Polaris.

Vigor: 30
Acumen: 35

Will: 40
Life: 110

Abilities:
Plasma Generation and Control: Arclight can generate extreme levels of high-frequency plasma energy of a type never before recorded, with an Intensity of 55. While immensely powerful, the energy releases no heat, and emits no permanent radioactivity. She can generate arcs of plasma energy (35 DP; 10 RV), remotely detonate blasts of energy at a significant range (25 DP; 30 RV), and is immune to the effects of her own power. Drawing energy from solar radiation as part of her posthuman ability, she is most powerful in direct sunlight, though may store enough energy throughout the day to allow the plasma energy conversion to occur in the absence of sunlight. Her Ability Intensity may increase +3 CS after 10 rounds in direct sunlight, and decreases -2 CS after 5 rounds in the absence of sunlight, though her ability to inflict damage is a constant. She regenerates in natural light at a rate of 5 points per round.
Flight: Arclight can agitate air molecules with low, invisible doses of plasma energy, allowing her to levitate or fly at moderate speed (15 IV; 15 Range; 10 Speed). The use of her power in this manner emits an odor described as being mildly metallic.
Energy Absorption: Arclight can absorb other forms of energy, and convert it to useful plasma energy with no apparent limit. However, she does not appear to experience an increase in power … Read on for more awesome…

This piece was done for the This Week Jam, the character being Panda of Body Bags.
I can’t EVEN tell you how fun this one was to do. I felt like we’d already seen so many awesome interpretations of Panda as the busty teen assassin of Jason Pearson’s comics, so why not play around with the concept a little bit? This TRDL Redesign gives us a Panda that’s a little older and a lot more experienced. I tried to keep with the classic colorways of my favorite Body Bags cover (the closeup of Panda’s chest and smile) and toyed around with affectations for her, including the wraparound tat and the piercings. The fetishes on the rifle will be recognizable, I’m sure. Anyway, one of my favorite pieces now!

TRDL Tribute – Body Bags
04/05/07

This was done by Joao for the This Week jam, the subject being Jason Pearson’s comic series, Body Bags.
This jam was in honor of the birth of Joao2.0. Body bags was one of the first series that Joao and I discussed and found that we shared a mutual admiration for the work of Jason Pearson. Joao’s been clearly influenced by the introduction of Joao2.0 into his life, as evidenced by this composition. All the same, I’m not sure I’d be the one to try and ‘burp’ Panda… she carries many sharp objects.
