th trdltr spiderzombie TRDL Tribute: Spider Zombie

This is a piece done for the R3 Jam, the subject being a design challenge, to create a zombified superhero pic in the spirit of Marvel’s zombie series, and of course, Halloween…

I had to do this. It fell into my frontal lobe while I was scheming various obtuse and random possibilities for this jam, including Strikeforce Morituri, The Watcher, and the giant carcass of a Celestial. But I started thinking about zombie faces, and suddenly, the famous Spider-kiss came to mind.

Ick, I say, Ick!

Happy Halloween!

trdl callie a TRDL Misc PT!VS Callie Oso

This was done for the PT!VS Halloween 07 collaborative project: Killing Callie. You can read about theis project in more detail and see both the project itself and the behind-the-scenes material, in the Picture This! Virtual Studio category at the bottom of the R3 Forum.

I had the task of designing the character plate for Callie ‘Calamity’ Oso, the protagonist/victim of our horror film series. My challenge was to provide a character that i felt more accurately, and positively, might reflect today’s college student, as opposed to the scream queen of your typical horror film, or boobfest of your typical pin-up project. That said, it’s clearly biased to my tastes: she’s intelligent, kind of geeky, and pushes MY buttons, and frankly, is no slouch in the looks department either. And in reality, I’m sure girls in college now are wearing the same as they were when i was in college: sweats. HA. But anyway, I dig her the most.

th trdltr halloween07 TRDL Tribute: Halloween 2007

Here’s our TRDL Halloween special: Hobgoblin vs. Black Cat…

This was another collaborative piece we passed back and forth a bit, though less so than some of our fully-integrated work. We sorted out the basic concept (Halloween-ish character names, fighting!) and then Joao designed the rough. He drew the gorgeous Felicia Hardy up front, and inked her as we well as the background. I drew and inked Hobgoblin and his nutty Jack O Lantern bombs, and then colored the piece. The smoke from his glider was done digitally. Happy Halloween!

trdl redclaw a TRDL Character Factory, No. 53: Red Claw

This is Red Claw, a posthuman Confrontation agent. I other words, a posthuman on contract with the government to be a villain, in order to give government-sponsored posthumans someone to fight and capture for propaganda purposes.

Concept, Design and Art: Joao Marques
Background: Thom Chiaramonte and Joao Marques

:::

Name: Mark Banner
Affiliation: n/a

Melee: 30
Reflex: 20
Muscle: 20
Vigor: 30
Acumen: 30
Observation: 20
Will: 30

Life: 100
Influence: 80

Abilities:

Disruption Field Generation: Red Claw can create cohesive disruption fields of crackling branching energy patterns, which he can form into long, jagged extensions of his own arms, or hurl into the ground to create flowing waves of energy outward from his own position. Those in contact with these patterns suffer both nervous system damage and the scrambling of any electronic devices unless specifically hardened against sub-electrical disruption attacks.

Red Claw’s limb extensions can be used for melee attacks as normal, but with added damage [40 DP] or area effect discharge [30 IV; 30 RV]. Any successful attack causes scrambling of electronic devices carried by targets or in area effect range with 30 IV.

Field Suit: Red Claw’s gear is comprised of b-mesh and reflexive impact plating, allowing some measure of protection from physical and energy attacks [20 AP]. Further, along with his own natural resistance to physical and energy attacks as part of the posthuman process [15 AP], Red Claw appears to be impervious to electrical and field-based energy weapons [50 AP].

Origin:

Though originally the identity ascribed to Code Red, upon his escape from a Northern European Achievement Initiative training compound and then later shown defeated and captured by the Liberty Group, the Red Claw persona was retained by the NEAI Posthuman Strategies Planning Group, and recycled, along with the Temper persona, for use in a … Read on for more awesome…

th trdltr lrrh TRDL Tribute: Little Red Riding Hood

This is a piece done for the weekly R3 Jam, this time being a Redesign Challenge for the classic fairy-tale heroine, Little Red Riding Hood.

My concept isn’t very original, as far as these things go, and especially compared to some of the awesome pieces contributed to the jam, but I imagined LRRH being stranded in the forest as a girl and going native, ultimately finding the means to survive by being more clever than her stalker, trapping and killing him, and then growing into a wolfcatcher. There you go!

th trdltr doomsday TRDL Tribute: Doomsday

This is a piece done for the This Week Jam, the subject being the supposed killer of Superman, 90′s Doomsday!

I won’t lie: this arc occurred at a time when I wasn’t interested in DC Comics. In fact, for the first half of the 90s I wasn’t interested in comics in general. But Superman bored me, and the Death of Superman stunt bored me more. And, to make it worse, the killer of Superman was an awkwardly designed musclebound beast in spandex cycling shorts? The yawn-inducing cliche that Supes would be taken out with a brute force opponent seemed like a missed opportunity. You take out an invulnerable, unstoppable godhead with an unexpected weak link from an unlikely foe, not this Doomsday, which seemed to epitomize the worst excesses of the 90s comics thing at the time. At least to me.

But then I realized I was using pretty myopic thinking. All comics in the mainstream represent the zeitgeist in one way or other. My Marvel books suffered, in many ways worse, than anything DC could do to their own properties. And, bottom line: I never READ it, so how could I judge?

I decided to draw Doomsday on model instead of redesigning him. I thought it would be the greater challenge. And frankly, i liked how he turned out. So hey.

Hope you like!

trdl temper a TRDL Character Factory, No. 52: Temper

This is Temper, a posthuman Confrontation agent. I other words, a posthuman on contract with the government to be a villain, in order to give government-sponsored posthumans someone to fight and capture for propaganda purposes.

Melee: 20
Reflex: 20
Muscle: 20
Vigor: 30
Acumen: 20

Life: 90

Abilities:

Enhanced Physiology: Temper’s body was hardened and enhanced by the posthuman process, making her exceptionally resistant to physical damage [30 AP], and virtually immune to energy-based attacks [60 AP]. As such, she rarely wears armor, though she has been injured in battle before.

Plasma Generation and Control: Temper can generate fields of self-contained plasma energy, which she can then direct towards specific targets. The greater the distance and speed the fields attain in dogged pursuit of their targets, the greater build-up of plasma energy when impact is made, increasing their potential for damage. Temper may generate one plasma field at a time, with little limit other than a required Vigor Save every 10 turns of continuous activity. Each plasma field may be locked onto a target with a Yellow Will Action, and then will pursue that target at approximately 10 Speed, until it connects with the target or, if the target makes an Orange Reflex Save, another object or obstacle intercepts it. Each round of travel, the field increases +1CS in damage, starting with an intensity of 10 DP and increasing up to a maximum of 50 DP. The fields will follow their targets around blind corners and even at great distances separating them. If Temper is incapacitated, the field collapses instantly. She cannot, however, self-terminate a field, so if she casts one at … Read on for more awesome…

th trdltr vampirella TRDL Tribute: Vampirella [TRDL Redesign]

This is a piece done for the This Week Jam, the subject being the classic horror cheesecake property, Vampirella.

NOT a fan of this character, but then again, I wasn’t ever really the target demographic. I DO like that her look has been simple and streamlined for many, many years with little variation, other than detailing, which lends her an iconic look. The more recent manga-esque redesign was challenging to me, not because I didn’t like the look of it, but because it was one of those moves where the new version of the character, more of a Bloodrayne rip-off (itself ripping off more than a few proprties, including Vampi) with a recognizable name and symbol slapped on it. But I didn’t really mind, since it wasn’t my cup of tea anyway.

Here, however, I tried to look at the character as a redesign opportunity that might still be somewhat recognizable to older Vampi stalwarts. Sure, I ditched the red leotard, white collar and black leather boots, but that look was never grounded in any reality logic anyway. I chose to giver her a similarly fleshy, tantalizingly small coverage area, but gave her a very dark red leather, almost black. I took the recognizable Vampi logo and made it a full-back tattoo. And I straightened her hair a bit. The rest is pretty much typical design choices for my TRDL design style, I guess.

Hope you like it!

trdl blueislander a TRDL Character Factory, No. 51: The Blue Islander

This is the Blue Islander, she is the national heroine of Fiji.

Concept, Design and Art: Thom Chiaramonte

:::

The Blue Islander

Name: Luise Inoke
Affiliation: National Hero: Republic of Fiji

Attributes:

Melee: 20
Reflex: 30
Muscle: 10
Vigor: 20
Acumen: 20
Observation: 30
Will: 10

Life: 80
Influence: 60

Abilities:

Physiological Enhancement: As a result of her posthuman process, the Blue Islander enjoys a natural resistance vs. physical and energy based attacks [20 AP].

Environment Manipulation: The Blue Islander has the uncanny ability to influence the natural environment around her. This may include localized weather manipulation, moderate seismic activity, liquefaction or soil decompression, rapidly- accelerated floral growth, volcanic activity, current and tide manipulation, and thermal control. Her abilities are most effective when in a natural environment, though not necessarily a tropical one.

The Blue Islander’s influence on the natural environment spreads across several sub-abilities as described above [30 IV]. The closer to the natural environment she is, the more powerful that ability becomes, at GM’s discretion. So, if performing actions in a tropical, desert or wilderness setting, she may enjoy an increase of +2CS or greater when manipulating the natural environment around her. Conversely, if within a city, or a largely artificial compound, her powers weaken similarly. Long periods spent away from a natural environment have distinct effects on her health, in the form of -10 points of Life every day that she remains away from environments where her body’s natural immune and endocrine systems may recharge, linked to various little-understood natural factors, such as pollens, lack of pollutants, moisture, etc. And being separated from the natural world by distance is even more damaging to her body, adding -1CS to each of her attributes per hour of prolonged distance. For this reason, she has great difficulty flying, and is … Read on for more awesome…

trdl vitesse a TRDL Character Factory, No. 50: Vitesse

This is Vitesse, the National Hero of Monaco.

Art and Origin: Thom Chiaramonte

:::

Vitesse

Name: Princess Catarina
Affiliation: National Hero: Monaco

Attributes:

Melee: 30
Reflex: 50
Muscle: 20
Vigor: 30
Acumen: 20
Observation: 30
Will: 10

Life: 130
Influence: 60

Abilities:

Physiological Enhancement: Vitesse enjoys a natural resistance vs. physical and energy based attacks [20 AP], as a result of her posthuman process, as well as athletic improvements reflected in her Attributes above.

Hyper-Acceleration: Vitesse may increase her inertia exponentially in repetitive motion. While not true hyper-speed in the sense of instantaneous motion, she may perform a repeated action, such as running, striking or dodging, and then build on that motion at an exponential rate, then maintain a greater rate of motion for extended periods of time. If she were to sprint, she would start at the pace of a normal athletic sprinter, then accelerate gradually to a blinding speed and maintain that speed continuously. Similarly, she may repeatedly punch or strike an opponent, and then increase her strike rate enormously. Her metabolism and endurance compensate for the increased speed and sustained energy expenditure, and her relative body density accounts for the increased physical pressures exerted on it during these actions, directly proportionate to her speed of motion, and as such, the physical action of striking an object at normal human speed is greater for Vitesse than if she were to be striking that object at a hyper-accelerated speed.

Vitesse can perform Actions at an accelerated rate exponentially and then for a sustained period of time. Each proposed Action may be performed once in the first round, twice in the second, four times in the third, and sixteen times in the fourth, etc. Each round, Vitesse must make a Power Save to continue the acceleration. If successful, she may … Read on for more awesome…
