This is a piece done for the This Week Jam, the subject being the Alex Toth masterpiece, Space Ghost.

As much as I loved the original Space Ghost as a kid, and admire Toth’s design sheets for the character, as an adult, my loyalty is with SG:C2C, which has been, at times, so funny it threatened my heart wall integrity. The best episode ever EVER. Ever ever? Ever EVER! Was Flipmode, starring guest Busta Rhymes, and, I expect, about a brick of weed. It’s just so out of control, this one. I have it well memorized. Fire Generation: La Torche has the latent posthuman ability to generate combustion energy from virtually any source, including her own skin oils. She has developed a sophisticated level of control over this ability, and can use it with precision, creating flame from her fingertips, remotely igniting objects with controlled intensity, extinguishing fires at range, and causing multiple objects to burst into flame rapidly and simultaneously. She is invulnerable to fire, but does not prefer the feeling of it on her skin, and as a result limits her personal combustion to her extremities. She enjoys this Ability at 40 Intensity, and can use it up to 25 Range. She takes no multi-action penalty when igniting or extinguishing multiple sources, but the damage associated with multiple Attacks is reduced by the number of attacks evenly. For example, if she creates two ignitions, each flares up with 20 Intensity, and while they may spread to cover larger areas, they will remain at the same intensity for 5 rounds before increasing 5 points each subsequent round thereafter until all fuel is extinguished. She must make a Will Action in order to generate multiple fires, and may also control the spread of her ignition with a separate Will Action. Failure in either case will cause the flame to spontaneously erupt at a random location within 10m of her and without her ability to control it until a Will Save is made.

I love this book, and for a story of [kinda] regular detectives investigating cape murders, Michael Avon Oeming’s great character design for the Powers themselves is often overlooked. I love many of these designs, and not just the obvious ciphers of mainstream characters. Anyway, this is Retro Girl (second version) who is/was pretty much the first major superheroine you meet in the book. If meet is the right word.

Pheromones: Bloodflower produces a strongly seductive pheromone that affects all mammals of any gender, drawing them to her and into a reduced state of brain activity. She can release the pheromones at will, and control their overall concentration and dispersal. These pheromones affect all mammals within range (one meter radius per round, up to 5m maximum), who must make a Will Save vs. Bloodflower’s Will or become submissive and controllable. They will perform her commands limited to performing tasks and hurting others, though murder and actions against friends or loved ones require additional Will Saves to force them to do so. Ive got a special mix for the chapter i’m working on right now. Not music specifically appropriate for the material, but music that gets m motivated. Usually I draw on Shuffle All, which gets me a lot of random stuff that works atmospherically, but maybe is kind of mellow (I have LOTS of ambient electronic music) so I decided to mash to some heel-stompers while I work this time around. Terra-Forming: Tarawera’s posthuman latent ability is to create simulacra of himself out of volcanic rock. These doppelgangers may act with limited independent decision-making, are fairly resistant to damage, but collapse when suffering sufficient impact. Tarawera may summon doppelgangers in any area where he is within 2m of earth, including within built structures, with a Yellow Power Action [40 IV]. Each doppelganger will literally push through the floor or ground surface as a vaguely humanoid, molten mass, which forms in his visage and hardens to a hot but stable state within seconds. Damage to the structure through which the doppelganger emerges is automatic and immediate. Doppelgangers may still be created beyond 2m from ground level, on an Orange Power Action, but the resulting automaton will materialize at ground level, outside of any structure separating them, and then be forced to work it’s way back to it’s creator, but with the limitations of its physical form (in other words, unable to pass through a structural membrane in a molten state.) For example, if Tarawera is on the 4th floor of a building and summons a doppelganger, it will form outside of the building at ground level, nearest his position on the floor above. Tarawera’s doppelgangers have a virtual Life of 60 points and have resistance from physical and energy based attacks [10 AP]. This is a piece done for the This Week Jam, the subject being Top Cow’s sexy cyborg, Aphrodite IX!

I’ve never read this book, never been much into the art or the style of the character, but what I ALWAYS liked was the basic color scheme and composition of the colors together. So that was kind of fun to do and amplify. Mine’s got a penchant for the best band in the whole wide world, and some cool fetishes on her belt, though. And fairly unique, among the world of Aphrodite IX imagery, in that she’s not upskirting you. Maybe that’s a detriment to the illustration…
