Her skeletal structure, musculature, limbic system, circulatory system and recovery capability were all boosted, enhancing her previously impressive athletic build well beyond the capabilities of a normal human. Clarice Foster was Australia’s most popular gymnast. A two-time gold-medal winner, she was the most popular sports hero in her native country, and was destined to break big in the United States after her results in the latest Olympic competition, where she matched Nadia Elena Comaneci’s Olympic record for a perfect score in competition. On her arrival from the Games, the Sydney Airport was struck by a terrorist attack. Miraculously, few were injured in the explosion. One of them was Foster, critically injured, and paralyzed from her injuries.

Despondent and unresponsive to her physical therapy, Foster’s recovery was excruciatingly slow. She seemed to have little desire to live as a paraplegic, haunted by the glory of her former life, and wracked with insecurity about her purpose in life as anything other than a sports star, despite that role’s elusive impermanence. She was a tragic figure, and quickly faded from the minds of an increasingly fickle audience.
