Sol Invictus is one of the most powerful characters in TRDL Mythology, and was a member of the multi-national crisis response team Rampart, before his retirement and self-imposed exile.

Art and Origin: Thom Chiaramonte

:::

Sol Invictus

Name: Unknown
Affiliation: Rampart

Attributes:

Melee: 35
Reflex: 40
Muscle: 75
Vigor: 100
Acumen: 25
Observation: 20
Will: 60

Life: 250
Influence: 105

Abilities:

Star Core: Sol Invictus has been fused with the literal core of a dying star. His physiology has adapted beyond that of normal dimensional matter, in order to contain it. He can release solar radiation in minute doses, or in waves, able to superheat small objects or level an urban center with a thought. His power is considerably greater than anyone on Earth realizes. He also has the ability to levitate and teleport at will. His physiological changes have also made him virtually impervious to harm.

Solar Energy Generation: Sol Invictus enjoys a virtually immeasurable level of solar energy generation and control as a latent posthuman ability. Not an artificial posthuman in the traditional sense, and a recipient of this Ability from unknown means, little real data has been collected on the limits of his power, other than that which Rampart scientists have been able to cautiously measure. His Ability is at approximately 1000 Intensity, Range and Speed, and he may manipulate his internal energies in a number of ways, including Levitation and Flight at 60 IV, Molecular Teleportation at 70 IV and virtual invulnerability to Physical, Energy and Temperature-based Attacks [80 AP]. He does not need to eat, drink or sleep.

Limitations: Sol Invictus operates under a series of self-imposed and psychologically reinforced psycho-active blockers. Rampart scientists and team psychologists assisted him with his requested conscious limits on his Abilities, as his fear of accidental release of his power nearly paralyzes him. He subsequently can sleep, and even, in theory, be incapacitated, without an involuntary release of his power. He performs Actions with a self-imposed Intensity limit of 60, when the risk of fatal injury to other living beings is present.

Origin:

Sol Invictus is either Ben Wrightly, James Brookerd, Gerald Haines or Dale Bridger, the crew of the Venture, the first of a new generation of space shuttles designed to facilitate more reliable transport between Earth and her three orbiting space stations. In an unidentified astral event, the shuttle was shoved through the spacetime continuum at faster-than-light speeds. Within two milliseconds, no record of its passing remained in orbit, and ISS 3 was destroyed, all crew on board deceased. Two years later, the man that would be called Sol Invictus returned from deep space, claiming to have been a pilot of an Earth ship that witnessed a dying star, and somehow absorbed some of its energy into his cellular constitution.

Clearly, his story was met with some cynicism, but his appearance was irrefutable, levitating over the White House Lawn. NASA scientists were unable to determine which of the doomed crewman of the Venture he had once been, if any, but his willingness to be studied and interviewed, his peaceful and contemplative nature, and his encouragement were such that America warmed to him, and the international community followed. He was eventually granted a place with Rampart, and was easily their most powerful member. He was a quiet man.

Unfortunately, he was also the target of many posthuman criminal attacks, foes seeking to topple him, test him or steal something of his seemingly impossible energy level. One such attack, by Crew Mururoa, momentarily crippled him such that he lost control of his internal power source for a split second. While he was able to redirect the radiation into the sea, it was the cause of the extinction of several hundred species of coastal fish, which devastated the fishing industry along the Pacific Coast. In addition, scandals within the team would further threaten to weaken Rampart’s stability, and made it further vulnerable to attacks by its adversaries.

Calling a press conference, Sol Invictus, the Man from There and Back, the ‘Unconquered Sun,’ announced his retirement, claiming to suffer from radiation poisoning, and retreated to seclusion in a secret location. He was not, of course, in any danger, but had decided his existence at a time of great destabilization in the posthuman community, was doing more harm than good.

He would be called back into public life during a dark period in the international struggle to resolve posthuman conflict evolved well beyond its early scale.

This is a piece done for the This Week Jam, the subject being Cheetah, from GoldDiggers…
I’ve never read GoldDiggers, or I think any of Perry’s comics, but I was astounded to see so MUCH of it on Antarctica Press’ site. A number of them are available for free download or online viewing, for those interested. Me? I just see Catlady in Indiana Jones stylie. That’s pretty much good enough for me!

Hey R3 gang,

This is mainly for those of you that have blogs and what not. As a web designer, when it comes to promoting a web site I just finished designing, we leave that up to the PR department which promotes are clients’ web sites in print and direct mail.

As many of you know, since November 12th, I’ve launched my "Capes ‘N’ Babes" web comic strip and I’m currently trying to figure out ways to publicize it or get the word out. So far, I have Project Wonderful ads, business cards and postcards. I will also be at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC June 20-22nd.

Thom, how did you go about getting the word out when you were first starting R3? Darren, how did you get word out about your various blogs> Just curious if people could give some things that might have helped them. It just seems to me that since November, I should have more then 50 unique visits to the strip.

:P

In the meantime, you can enjoy the following piece of art:

This is a piece done for the R3 Jam, the character being Liz Sherman of hellboy lore.

I chose to draw her incarnation as seen in the Hellboy Animated film Storm of Storms, which I own, but haven’t yet seen. The character design plates that were released on the supernets were amazing, and the design logic, the colorway, and even the cool posture of the original design were very inspiring to me. I had to draw her!

The Player is a member of the Australia/NZ regional posthuman defense team, Alchera.

Concept, Design and Art: Joao Marques
Background: Thom Chiaramonte and Joao Marques

:::

The Player

True name: Kevin McLean
Affiliation: Alchera

Melee: 10
Reflex: 20
Muscle: 10
Vigor: 10
Acumen: 30
Observation: 20
Will: 30

Life: 50
Influence: 80

Abilities:

Environment Suit: The Player wears a technologically sophisticated life support suit, designed to keep researchers alive over several days with minimal interaction with their environment. He can survive without food, water or rest for up to three weeks, thanks to the suits recirculation moisture reclamation system, and a specific combination of drugs and sensory adaptations, which allow him to ignore the effects of fatigue. An unintended side effect of the suit’s long-term use is addiction. The Player will wear the suit until he is unable to sustain consciousness, then slip into a light coma for several days while his body recovers. This recurring process of complete exhaustion and recovery has artificially aged McLean to approximately twenty years older than his chronological age. Despite being in his early twenties, he looks, and feels, much older. The suit also offers modest protection from physical attacks [20 AP], and virtually unlimited resistance to electrical and energy attacks [60 AP]. Under normal atmospheric conditions the life support system has exceptional intensity and duration [30 IV], and under pressurized or vacuum conditions the life support system has above average intensity and duration [10 IV].

Virtual Light Synthesis: The Player can generate hard light simulacrums of individuals and environments manifested from the subconscious of his target. The simulacrum created is, by every sensory definition, real, and will exist as long as The Player wills it. The primary latent posthuman Ability is Telecasting [40 IV; 40 RV]; In order to determine the victim’s greatest fear, The Player’s Ability Intensity [40] is compared to the opponent’s Will. If it is equal to or higher than the Will Attribute, The Player may extract the information from the opponent’s psyche and then in the following round, a Yellow Ability Action will create and sustain the telecast. Multiple targets may be affected by unique telecasts, but may not see the telecasts intended for other targets. Each target being telecasted forces a -1CS penalty on The Player’s Ability Intensity to generate the telecast in the first round of each casting. Subsequent rounds may be sustained with new Actions required only if distracted, injured, or lost consciousness. If injured or distracted, an Ability Intensity Save is required, and if successful, the telecast is not interrupted. Victims may attempt to overcome telecast with an Orange Will Save once every three rounds. If unchallenged, the telecast will expire in 1d8 hours. A victim experiencing a telecast will believe it to be real and perceive themselves to be engaged with it: if it is an opponent it will threaten them, attacking and taking virtual damage as if fighting a real foe; if it is an event, the victim will believe themselves to be isolated in their experience with it and vulnerable to virtual damage from the encounter. The Intensity of the telecasting attacks will be determined by the GM, and the victim, on virtual reduction of Life to zero, will fall into a coma until the telecast expires.

Origin:

The Player’s suit is one originally worn by a small number of a virtual reality engineer explorers, financed by the Australian government, designed to test the human brain’s ability to perceive the difference between shared and actualized realities over long periods of time. Seven explorers were placed in long-term suspended animation in order to conduct the experiment. Thirty-three weeks later, the explorers were roused via a chemical bath, but only McLean regained full consciousness.

To the program leaders’ surprise, not only had McLean survived the experiment, but he had returned to consciousness with a startling new ability. He was able to pull images from the sub-conscious of anyone around him, usually manifesting in experiences of loss, nostalgia, or missed opportunity. The original support team for the experiment was lost to the psychological after-effects of unanticipated exposure to these manifestations, long after McLean was able to cause them to cease existing. A new team was brought in to help him learn to control this newfound ability. It was determined that greater control could be retained while McLean wore the environment suit he used in the experiment. Soon, his addiction to the suit’s nutrient and drug baths made him loathe to remove it.

Recognizing his ability’s potential, and his desire to put it to good use, the Australian government placed McLean in Alchera, the joint Australia/ New Zealand regional defense posthuman team. He was also asked to continue to assist the research division’s experiments in tapping the sub-conscious information pathways of normal humans, using his own body as a control study. In the course of one of these later experiments, while studying an Aborigine savant who was barely aware of his surroundings, yet able to give precise answers to complex mathematical challenges, and recite details of events happening around the world, McLean discovered, in this new subject, great sub-conscious energy as well as the potential for great tragedy. While trying to relay this information to the researchers, an equipment malfunction caused a feedback overload in the Aborigine’s sensNet array, and the man was killed, while McLean slipped into a seemingly unrecoverable coma.

When he woke from the coma several weeks later, McLean would report having spent the time having detailed, inexplicable conversations with the Aborigine who had perished in the accident. He insisted the man was still alive in some state, and soon, he appeared, a rising, glowing surge of water from a lab sink, taking a shimmering human form. Though the researchers were unable to determine if he was conjured from McLean’s own powers of sub-conscious manifestation, as some sort of delayed remnant of the man’s last thoughts, or whether this was indeed a new genesis of his own sentience, the creature, known by his tribal name, Tangkuinya, would join The Player as a member of Alchera, and play an important role on the team.
