TRDL Tribute: Lady Bullseye
21/10/08

This was done for the R3 Jam, the character being the new Lady Bullsye, from the pages of Daredevil. Now, I’m a few issues behind in my reading, but Brubaker set up this next-gen character as a young woman trapped as a sex slave in Thailand or somewhere, who witnessed Bullsye blowing into the warehouse and killing all her captors in his acrobatic, cocky, elaborately stylized manner… of course, he wasn’t here for the girls, just killing the big boss for some underworld reason or other, but this young, damaged girl immediately obsessed over him and became convinced that he was her savior. Fast forward to today, and she’s groomed herself as his spiritual successor. So far, it’s been an interesting and engaging read, one of a long string of effective femme fatale origin stories for the Daredevil mythos. Good stuff! The real Lady Bullseye wears a skintight sexy bodysuit with the ring motif of the bullseye target on it, but what i decided to do was show her in a stylized kimono, because I wanted to go the opposite direction from how sexy the character is, and show her androgynous and shapeless… but still interesting. I carries the bullseye target motif onto the kimono, and I’ve given her Murdock’s walking cane and billyclubs, which is sort of a play on the scales of justice, though in this case, two aspects of his dichotomous life.

TRDL Tribute: P8tch Cammando Nerd
21/10/08

This commission was prepared for John Young, proprietor of the innovative P8tch concept. These are great, and you’ve possibly seen our posts about the product on the forum previously. Young creates square bar code patterns [ QR Codes] unique for each buyer, which are woven onto wickedly cool patches which you can sew onto your jacket, bag, etc… another suitably geeky cohort who sees the patch and recognizes the code can whip out a barcode scanner on a portable device, scan the code, and receive data (a website, a coupon, a media file, whatever) so it’s hard to get MORE obscure and geeky than this. I mean, I think it outgeeks even THINKGEEKs products. Anyway, Young has the ‘commando nerd’ concept as his mascot, originally designed as a guy in functional field fatigues with equipment, his patch, and glasses, etc. I had free reign on this one, so I drew today’s geek, which happens, thanks to geekdom being embraced by the cool crowd, to be a hot toddie!

TRDL Tribute: Kenya
21/10/08

This commission was done for a longtime commission client who has me design characters for his series of comics and fiction pieces set in a space opera universe. You may have seen some of the earlier designs done for him, including The Admiral, Xar, Toni, Cherie and others.
This one was an interesting challenge. I was told that she was She-Hulkish in size and raw beauty, but also in terms of having a different skin color. She’s an arachnoid alien, so was to have spider eyes, lots of spider details to the face, yet still be beautiful, grey skin, spacey military uniform, and extra appendages. So i used my design language I’ve been wielding on his other characters in the same story, and came up with this, which has turned out to be one of my favorites down for him!

This was an illustration originally done in 2004, which was, I thought, a very successful period WW piece, and certainly my favorite of my own attempts at this iconic character. In fact, it’s release led to some discussion with two different publishers about doing some comic work on period superhero stories, neither of which ultimately felt like a good fit. However, I was recently inspired to redo the piece to contribute to the Wonder Woman Day 2008 charity auction. More on that can be found here. There were a number of things I wanted to change about the piece, but this was one of the few examples of where I wanted to redo it, but keep the majority of it the same, so I pushed the original inks to blueline, re-inked them, and made the necessary changes, which included more substance to the left arm and leg, refinements to the hair, an entirely new face, and changes to the hand and wrist holding the lasso, as well as new lasso itself. The result is very similar to what it looked like in 2004 in color and composition, but a much better illustration, I think.

One of my clients is requesting a superhero-based piece of work from me, which is not surprising. However, he needs it to be as mainstream superhero in design as possible. I may end up designing new, generic heroes and villains for this piece, but I thought I’d put it to you as well:
Of all the 200+ TRDL original characters we’ve published so far, which do you think have designs that are th emost four-color, mainstream superhero? I think it’s a tough call, because our design philosophy is the other direction. But let me know some names if you have them.
So far, we have identified:
Material Girl
Libertine
Benefactor
The Rake
Bolter
Any ideas?

TRDL Tribute: Talisman
12/10/08

This was done for the R3 Jam, the subject being Talisman, daughter of Shaman, from Alpha Flight. Since I’ve drawn her in her more contemporary Omega Flight duds twice in the last year, I thought I’d go back to her first costume, from that John Byrne cover that rocked my young hormones back in 1880… except for where I made a costume revision based on something about Talisman that always bothered me: those damn elf boots. Way too dated, bugged me even THEN. Sure, barefoot would be pretty tough in the hinterlands of Alaska, but still.

TRDL Tribute: Mockingbird
12/10/08

This was done for the R3 Jam, the subject being Mockingbird, the dead lover of Clint Barton. I loved Mockingbird back in the day, admittedly mostly because I liked monochrome or black costumes and this was one of Marvel’s better ones: highlighting her hair and her skin and the shiny metallic billy clubs she used. That said while I was never a fan of blond characters as a general rule, and while she was certainly confident in the old West Coast Avengers books, she never struck me as a genius. But according to the Handbooks, she’s a brilliant scientist with a keen analytical mind! Who, you know happened to enjoy running around in a leotard. Anyway, I chose to pay homage to the Handbook illustration for Mockingbird, as it was an image I knew very well from my youth. I was intrigued by how much her back looks broken to my eye today. Didn’t have a problem with that as a young teen, I have to admit.
