Corona

Name: Corrine Mattesi
Affiliation: Project Hermes

Attributes:

Melee: 20
Reflex: 30
Muscle: 20
Vigor: 30
Acumen: 30
Observation: 40
Will: 50

Life: 100
Influence: 120

Abilities:

Light Generation and Control: Corona can wield nearly complete control of the visible light spectrum, with an Intensity of 50. She can create blinding flashes of high-intensity illumination causing 40 points of damage, or cause ambient and source light to fall out of the visible spectrum, creating areas of darkness. She can shift the visibility of specific objects, creating a form of invisibility (effective Intensity of 30 points.) She can also change the perceived colors and textures of objects around here, for limited camouflage capability (effective Intensity of 20 points.) Finally, she has begun to develop the ability to form ‘hard-light’ objects, which cause an involuntary response from targets whose autonomic responses react to them as if they were physical forces affecting them (perceived to be physical objects causing 30 points of virtual damage, which is psychosomatically self-applied.)

Origin:

Corrine Mattesi was a young New York Police Department patrol officer, assigned to the Bronx’s 49th Precinct. She was in uniform for nine months before being tapped by an interagency scout team, studying law enforcement and emergency response personnel for posthuman potential. She received her posthuman bio-mutations as part of the treatments developed by the Freedom Project, the United States’ own government-funded Posthuman Development group, which was attempting to help build a second American posthuman response team, called Project Hermes.

Her treatments were designed to influence how her optic nerves perceived the visible light spectrum, with a goal of increasing her long-range vision and reaction time, to supplement a general … Read on for more awesome…

2008 11 23 1213 TRDL Carbon RPG System Rules

Third Rail Design Lab Carbon System

TRDL Carbon is a simple, open-source character descriptor system for role-playing game purposes. It has it’s origin in a popular, long-dead superhero RPG, which illustrated the simplicity and fluid ease of gaming when using a percentage-dice based system for fast, dynamic adventuring with a minimum of complicated game mechanics. The primary function of the Carbon system is to describe character attributes and abilities so that they may be easily converted to other game systems as desired by interested GMs. Obviously, the characters can be played within the Carbon Rules themselves as-is, or with the Marvel RPG on which this system was based. GMs should feel free to modify Carbon to their own desired specifications as house-rules, or to adapt TRDL characters for their own campaigns in the system of their choice.

The TRDL Carbon System is based on the use of a percentile die roll as the primary random number generator, with use of other common gaming die for other types of rolls, where needed. All attributes and abilities are described as a two digit number between 0 and 100, and can be thought of as a percentage of maximum possible. Within the normal constraints of the System, stats will not be less than 0 or greater than 100, though certain exceptions can be made at GM’s discretion for godhead characters. And if they aren’t Lovecraftian, I don’t want to hear about it. Each attribute and ability power ranking is provided as a set number, according to the following values, in increments of 5: 0, 5, 10, 15…100, 1000. These values will be familiar to those that played the Marvel system in the past. As the range of values possible in an attribute represent a percentage of max, a baseline of ‘normal human’ is … Read on for more awesome…

trdltr terra a TRDL Tribute Terra

This is a piece done for the R3 Illustration Jam, the subject being Terra, of the Teen Titans.

I won’t tell tales out of school, I’m not the biggest fan of the Teen Titans… but I do remember Terra. Not enough to get her facts straight (I thought she hooked up with Deathstroke, her DADDY, which in fact he wasn’t… but she WAS underage) but enough to have a sense of her importance in Teen Titans continuity. I was surprised to learn they created a new Terra recently, who has nothing in common with the original. However, since I wasn’t in the mood to draw a blond girl in a brown leotard with a turtleneck, I thought I’d give this new Terra try. At least she’s a brunette!

trdltr thanksgiving08 a TRDL Thanksgiving 08 The Silk Spectre

This piece was stuffed down the barrel of a TRDL shotgun, aimin’ to kill two illustration birds with one metaphorical stone. The beautiful femme fatale Silk Spectre, as re-imagined int he Watchmen movie, is all sorts of awesome: part Bettie Page, part superheroine, and all Carla Gugino. So I took inspiration from the vintage pin-up illustration done for the film, and made this little Thanksgiving card, serving as our holiday release and also as the entry in the Watchmen R3 Jam… see, economy is the name of the game in these troubled times!

Wishing you a great Thanksgiving, my R3 Army!

trdl basilisk img TRDL Character Factory, No. 101: Basilisk

Basilisk is a member of The Bad Seeds, and can turn you to stone by looking at you. Which would suck.

Art and Origin: Thom Chiaramonte

:::

Basilisk

Name: Cassandra Ellery
Affiliation: The Bad Seeds

Attributes:

Melee: 20
Reflex: 30
Muscle: 20
Vigor: 30
Acumen: 20
Observation: 50
Will: 30

Life: 100
Influence: 100

Abilities:

Cohesive Mental Suggestion: Basilisk’s latent posthuman ability is a psychosomatic paralysis transmitted via direct eye contact. It only works with physically proximal targets, not through reflection or transmitted images. The target loses control of voluntary motor function, and becomes rigidly paralyzed, while their nervous system begins to fragment. The process is reversible either through Basilisk’s will, again transmitted visually, or through, in some cases, medical treatment to stem the collapse of the nervous system. Victims are lucid, but unable to communicate. Over the course of days, if not given medical treatment intravenously, the victim will die from dehydration. Even with medical treatment, over the course of several weeks, the victim’s nervous system will continue to degrade, unless successfully corrected through physical therapy and surgery.

Basilisk’s Suggestion Attack is not automatic. Her 30 IV Attack requires no Action to initiate, merely an attempt at eye contact. Therefore, if the victim is surprised (using an Ambush Action) or unable to look away, the attack will be automatic, but if the victim has the ability to evade eye contact, they must make a Yellow Reflex Save in order to avoid the attack. Once affected, the victim must make an Orange Vigor Save or become paralyzed, losing 10 points of Life each hour until dead or medically stabilized. On a Red Save, the affect will wear off in 1-10 hours, with Health returning at the same 10 points/hour rate.

Cassandra Ellery was one of the most favored lovers … Read on for more awesome…

trdl2_announce.jpg

OK, as you know my one true love is the one TRDL, and the R3 Forum therein. But I have set up and maintain various web 2.whatever sites as well, because these are, as said in the parlance of our times, the Means and Methods. I know many of you, my R3 Army, are on these sites. This is a call to link up! If you have not befriended/linked/aligned with/favorited/followed/skulked in the corner with/bookmarked TRDL on these sites, please do so. If you already have, and I haven’t reciprocated, let it be known, and I’ll do the same.

I always post new art on TRDL’s illustration site first, and new news here. But I port the stuff through Flickr to other sites as well, and to the artshares. I send out stuff via RSS Feed, and I’m slowly looking to harmonize all this so I can get it to the most sites with the least amount of redundancy. And i’ve made good strides since I started the networking this year. We’ve had some members of these other sites come join us here, and I’ve certainly found many awesome artists through them as well. As long as we don’t attract any zombies or cyberstalker types, I’m cool with it.

So, join me here at these sites, and let’s expand the R3 Army!

trdltr cannonball a TRDL Tribute: Cannonball

This is a piece done for the R3 Illustration Jam, the subject being Cannonball, of the X-Men.

As older, lifer comic readers, we all struggle with the issue of time passing: do we want our characters to age? Do we want them to change, designs evolving with the time? Or do we want them to remain a static design, and retain the immortality of our memories of reading them as youths? I think it’s an interesting problem, with comics, the way film and literature doesn’t.

Anyway, I personally quite like that the New Mutants of my childhood are now teachers of new students, or, in some cases, full-fledged X-Men. This design for Cannonball is my favorite of all the modern interpretations and updates of those younger characters, and I like that the character is at least currently being written recognizably: we know it’s ole Sam from back in the day, but we also see that he’s grown up. And an absolute minimum of aw shucks over-stereotyped verbal references doesn’t hurt, either.

trdltr grimyoung a TRDL Tribute: Grim [Young Version]

This was a design done for R3 member Heritage, for his creator-owned comic project. As you may recall, I designed Grim in her adult, experienced period, which you can see here. This time, we set out to show her as a young adventurer, just starting out. The model reference was Natalie Portman (lucky me!) after her hair was growing back in from V, specifically as she looked hosting SNL. I simplified the costume, added subtle, textured grip tabi boots, and a domino mask. I think she came out pretty coquettish!

trdltr vocalist a TRDL Tribute: The Vocalist [Musical Druid]

This is a commission, done for R3 Member Musical Druid, for her collection of, well, Musical Druids! The task was simple: a druid, any genre, with an instrument. MD has collected several awesome pieces in this theme, and I was inspired to re-interpret the definition of instrument. For a vocalist, it’s their own body. I added the suitcase full of sheet music to give us the reminder that she is a singer, but also to give it that ‘oopsie!’ cheesecake feel to the retro composition.
