trdltr cannonball a TRDL Tribute: Cannonball

This is a piece done for the R3 Illustration Jam, the subject being Cannonball, of the X-Men.

As older, lifer comic readers, we all struggle with the issue of time passing: do we want our characters to age? Do we want them to change, designs evolving with the time? Or do we want them to remain a static design, and retain the immortality of our memories of reading them as youths? I think it’s an interesting problem, with comics, the way film and literature doesn’t.

Anyway, I personally quite like that the New Mutants of my childhood are now teachers of new students, or, in some cases, full-fledged X-Men. This design for Cannonball is my favorite of all the modern interpretations and updates of those younger characters, and I like that the character is at least currently being written recognizably: we know it’s ole Sam from back in the day, but we also see that he’s grown up. And an absolute minimum of aw shucks over-stereotyped verbal references doesn’t hurt, either.
