This is a TRDL Redesign of War Machine:

I took cues from modern war machine design, of monochrome colorway and the concept of exposed ballistic/missile weapon systems. I was also inspired by the fact that Rhodes is active USAF in the Iron Man film. Also, when designing Iron Man mythos armors, I like to draw inspiration from specific design trends in the history of Iron Man armor design. In the case of War Machine, contrary to what they did in the 90s (which I hated, taking a Toyfare-minded snap-on weapon gaudy Iron Man design and turning it grey and black) I went back to basics, and took inspiration from the old gray MK I (film terms) armor, whih was the most military and weapon evocative look. I took some of the massing and shape from that. I painted the thing a dark matte finish, reasoning that like all good stealth weapons of death, it would come in under cover of night, be virtually physically invisible in the night sky, radar invisible, have that scary black helicopter vibe where all you see are lights and muzzle flashing. Granted, I gave it a USAF designation, which a real black ops vehicle presumably would not have. Anyway, here’s the other thing: in the comics, especially recently, they made a big deal about War Machine armor no longer being Start Tech designed, but built on another armor platform root. So, in my design, War Machine, though taking some visual cues from Iron Man, is based on the old MANDROID armor. Hence the shape of the boots, the oversized shoulder pads, and the hose couplers at the arms. I just couldn’t do snap-on missile launchers and gatling guns. But I compromised with pop-up missile batteries of micro-homing rockets, like we used to get in Macross.

This week, it’s War machine, Tony’s pal Jim Rhodes in his own armor.
You’d think I’d be jumping in the air clicking my heels over this choice, but you may notice I’ve never drawn him before, and for a reason. I’ve always disliked War Machine, as a product of the Toyfare 90s plug-on weapon rehash period. But Avengers: Initiative sort of gave me a reason to like him a bit more, and I’m warmed to the idea of his existence.
See what you come up with!
