The comments on this jam suggestion were to not redesign the costume, just gender-bend the character. So, that’s what you are tasked to do!

This is a piece done for the R3 Illustration Jam, the subject being Kraven the Hunter.

Sergios Craving-Bird’s parents were killed by a costumed villain, in hiding from the authorities. The young Chumash, studying for his PhD in Chemistry, dedicated his life to avenging the death of his family, and took inspiration from his father’s passion for big game hunting. He began tracking and apprehending masked vigilantes and delivering them to the authorities, creating a name for himself as a normal man fighting back against the dangers of unchecked superhuman conflict.
In order to capture the infamous urban vigilante, Spider-Man, he recovered samples of abandoned webbing and resynthesized the compounds to create a restraining material that Spider-Man’s web material could not adhere to, and used it to ensnare and overpower him.

My redesign revised Kraven’s origin, from a Russian big game hunter, to a Native American chemist.
References:
- The name: Sergios is a variant of the Latin name that Sergei is based on, from Kraven’s real name in the comics. Craving-Bird, obviously that’s my take on the comics’ Kravinoff. In this case, Craving-Bird being a name taken voluntarily to represent his desire to avenge his parents, and having ‘flown’ far from home to study.
- The equipment is tracker/ tactical gear, in a dark jungle color. I DID include weapons, unlike Kraven, but he HAS captured Spider-Man without their use, which is more consistent with the intent of the comics.
- Bare feet, surgical gloves: the bare feet allude to the comics’ Kraven’s use of bare hands, ie. his own abilities, to subdue his prey. The surgical gloves are to remind us that he is still a man of science.
- The scar on his cheek and shredded ear are a reference to the lion fur the comic version wears
- the outline of a skull and bones tattoo is to allude to death, his suicide after capturing Spider-Man in the famous arc.

This is a piece done for the R3 Illustration Jam, the subject being Princess Leia, from Star Wars.

Though the temptation was strong to draw the Slave Leia costume, I wanted to go with my personal favorite look for her from those films, the Hoth snow bunny suit, with quilted padding and the cool braid-bun thing going on. In keeping with my tradition of showing hotties short-circuiting bots, I went with a Power Droid this time. Interesting side note: coincidentally, on Facebook, the same day I completed this, I received the ‘Power Droid’ unlock int he Star Wars Action Figure micro-app-for-no-reason. How random.

My Mhom has expressed interest in having a commission done for her, and so of course I complied, and this was the result, done for her birthday this year. It is an Alternate History view of her, circa 1909, as colonial explorer in a steampunky way. There are many Mhom-specific references, from her painting, to her glasses, the uniform instead of a dress (she’s very independent) and the reference to her favorite dish: liver and onions. Also, a monkey!

It’s Kraven! Here’s his classic JRSR Marvel Handbook shot, but there have been redesigns here and there, and alternate universe versions and the like, so pick your poison…

Draw away, young padawans…

PS, this is a nice little contextual discussion about the challenge of making Leia…Leia, back in the day:

Happy New Year! Time to draw!

This year we start off with a simple design challenge. Less of a design challenge, more of a recontextualization exercise. Take a comic cover, and redraw it. You can draw it literally (same character, same pose) or do a homage to it with a different character or design for the same character (as is often done in comics)…

Try to have fun with this!
