This was done both as a New Years pic for Third Rail but also for the NYE Celebration jam. I think I have been waiting my whole comic-reading life for Rogue to have a costume so aesthetically pleasing, in other words, fly. I love it to death. Acuna! Anyway, we hope you and yours have a great New Years and an exciting year to follow…

This is a special holiday-themed jam. As the season’s holidays are wrapping up, I thought since we usually keep holiday-timed jams current for a few weeks, anyway, why not aim for the next holiday, so we have some topical illustrations to share with the rest of the interwebs.

The theme of this jam is New Years Eve. You know, take a character or scene you like, give it a New Years Eve celebratory twist, and have fun with it.

Happy holidays, all!

So we have a tradition, where we each buy an ornament for our tree so that by the time wee Z can appreciate them, there will be some interesting ones up IN there. This was started the year of her conception, so this is our second year of collecting.

I scored the limited edition Iron Man ornament from Hallmark, from 2008. SOLID!

Image

But then, while I was carrying it into the house, Z gave a good Curly Kick and I dropped him.

I really hope this isn’t an omen about IM2.

Anyway, I have to spray paint him gunmetal anyway, so I’ll glue it right up. (We have a grey/white/metal colorscheme going on the ornaments, because we’re dorks.)

I could have sworn I posted this already, but this was our TRDL Helloween 2009 pic. This year, Joao and I each chose a monster or halloween-ish themed mainstream character. I drew Ghost, and Joao drew Vampirella. I put together the background digitally. I think my favorite detail in the whole thing are the wyrms carrying housepets away. But hey!

Process notes:

Here’s a detail of Ghost’s face:

Here’s Joao’s Vampi coming together:

Here’s the build-up of the background:

And here’s the sepia variant:

Image

I tried to do a creepy old sepia type image for this, which was in fact, the root concept, like it was an old placard from an archive discovered in a collection of lost manuscripts or what have you. The background certainly speaks to it. However, true sepia wasn’t working for me due to the medium tones of the two man characters (one is all white and flesh, and the other a lither red, and flesh again… just didn’t punch enough)… I tried a version with color but muted, which is shown below. Ultimately, though, I liked full color for the main figures the best, and thats what we went with.
