trdltr cyclops10 a TRDL Tribute: Cyclops [Ray Harryhausen Jam]

This was done for the R3 Illustration jam on Third Rail Design Lab’s R3 Forum, the subject being the extensive catalog of fabulous stop-motion creatures from the Ray Harryhausen shop.

I chose the famous Cyclops for one simple reason: I had a lead miniature of same, back in the day, and as such it offers TRIPLE NOSTALGIA value:
a) reminds me of enjoying the film as a kid
2) reminds me of painting lead miniatures
d) reminds me of THIS figure in particular

AWESOME!

Here we have another TRDL propaganda type piece, though not a girlie pin-up this time. A fine manly musk, however…

Please enjoy! Hell yes!

TRDL Tribute: Cyclops [Ray Harryhausen Jam]

First, here’s a screencap of the Cyclops in question. You’ll recognize him, I’m sure.

Here’s inks over pencils, prior to assembling the ad, but showing the relative sizes of the original figures to each other…

Darren Taylors Perspective Grid Tutorial (Photoshop)

Darren did a tutorial privately some years back, showing how he incorporated perspective grids not only for hard environmental components but on the character figures themselves. We’re still looking for that one, but int he meantime, he put together this great video tutorial on his grid layout technique!

Sadly, no AUDIO! hahahaha

trdltr bwj10 a TRDL Tribute: Black Widow (Joao)

This was done for the R3 Illustration jam on Third Rail Design Lab’s R3 Forum, the subject being the character Black Widow.

What a great shot. Another supposedly-impossible background perspective shot from our man Joao, who thinks he can’t draw them and yet totally owns them. I love the story conveyed here, and the rope she’s holding. Brilliant.

trdltr aqualord a TRDL Tribute: Aqualord

This was done for the R3 Illustration jam on Third Rail Design Lab’s R3 Forum, the subject being the Crime Syndicate from DC’s Earth 2. Specifically, designing your own members (a Design Challenge)…

This is Aqualord, the evil version of Aquaman. Now, the pic itself is rad for the details of the costume and how the same hook hand has real menace when you just imply villainy… but the camera angle, and the shark overhead? Genius.

trdltr thespirit forum TRDL Tribute: The Spirit (Joao)

This was done for the R3 Illustration jam on Third Rail Design Lab’s R3 Forum, the subject being the tragic passing of our R3 founding father Vlad, and the Noir Jam in his name, as well as for our Spirit jam. This was one of those pics where Joao floored me with his creative application of an old school style. His use of black and outline and high contrast is epic, in my opinion. And the dame!

trdltr vanda a TRDL Tribute: Vanda (Sport Billy)

This was done for the R3 Illustration jam on Third Rail Design Lab’s R3 Forum, the subject being ‘childhood hotties’…

OK, I love when Joao pulls out something foreign to me, from his European background. It’s always fun learning about the projects he enjoyed growing up (or stuff young Joao2.0 enjoys today) that doesn’t make it to the states.

As I understand it, Sport Billy was a lil guy who had a sporty duffel bag there filled with all manner of ‘sports gadgets’, which he pulled out as needed, in his adventures. I don’t even know what a sports gadget is, circa 1980. A running shoe? Anyway, the nemesis was the evil Vanda here. I can see how she left an impression on him, with that get-up. Also explains his obsession with weirdly-colored women in comics! HA

trdltr spiderman blackcat a TRDL Tribute: Spider Man and Black Cat

This was done for the R3 Illustration jam on Third Rail Design Lab’s R3 Forum, the subject being ‘Super Girlfriends’…

Man, Joao and I grew up reading comics at the same age. For us, Spidey wasn’t burdened with the loss of Gwen Stacy and while MJ was around, the real hotness was Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat. This was, of course, in the time before the retcon period where every character came back or changed at the whim of a given creative team or editorial department. I loved Black Cat. Sure, it’s Catwoman, but a more striking design. Love the hair, love the costume and the low-cut top, love the playful exchanges with Petey… and Joao’s pic here captures the romance perfectly. Plus, remember this pic, next time he’s whining that he can’t draw perspective or backgrounds…

trdltr imperial guard a TRDL Tribute: Imperial Guard

This was done for the R3 Illustration jam on Third Rail Design Lab’s R3 Forum, the subject being the Shi’Ar Imperial Guard.

This one got about half-way done and then went into hibernation as we focused on TRDL project work… Joao recently pulled it out and finished it and it’s really a reminder of how criminal it is that we haven’t moved on our TRDL Comics work… because I kind of think that a world where we don’t have Joao doing pages, but could, is a sadder place. I especially love that we both managed to draw Manta…

Please enjoy! Hell yes!

trdltr herbiej10 a TRDL Tribute: H.E.R.B.I.E. in the TRDL Universe (Joao!)

This was done for the R3 Illustration jam on Third Rail Design Lab’s R3 Forum, the subject being the Fantastic Four family robot, H.E.R.B.I.E.

Joao really hit me in the face with this piece, like a Superboy Punch full of awesome. This is an FF comprised of suitable dopplegangers from within our own TRDL Mythology (The Aksehiran for Thing, La Fievre for Johnny, Material Girl for Reed, and Zero for Sue)

And as if that wasn’t enough, his H.E.R.B.I.E. with the question marks in the optics? Slays me.
