Post R3 Designer Jam FAQs
Image

Change is good! The R3 Designer Jam is one of two new jams you'll be seeing in the coming days, offering members an opportunity to branch out from the This Week jam and try something a little different, with a less hectic pace.

The concept behind the R3 Designer Jam is to give participants an opportunity to develop their takes on comic design... the jam will run for several weeks at a time, so there's plenty of time to get into the action. It's all about putting YOU in the designer role. Design your own character, and watch the R3 community draw their versions of it! Select a super-team from the comics, and have everyone draw their own re-casting of the line-up. Create a what-if? scenario, re-imagining a classic character in a new context. Anything goes!

Interested parties need not be artists. Anyone can participate. Just send me a PM with your request or idea, and I'll add it to the pot.

Design away, my robots...

As with This Week, the subject matter will be ganweral-audience themed, to a point. We'll make this one R rated, but not X rated, so you have some extra room, within reason. Let me know if you have any questions!

Edited: Here's the method:

1. select some ideas for R3 Designer Jams- PM or email me
2. when the jam is announced, draw like you stole something
3. post your finished piece, as well as any WIPs, roughs, pencil sketches, concepts, anything that speaks to your process. You can do WIPs and post them as you go, or add them AFTER your finished piece, as I like to do.

Go!

So I've already gotten some ideas for future Designer Jams from a few of you. Remember you can post them to me via PM, and I'll add them to the pot!

The Iron Man jam, the first of the lot, will be on for at least the next month, so you have plenty of time! And remember, you can offer up your own characters as subjects for future jams, too!

Points for anyone who knows who this guy is up top?

Oh, uh never mind, he's Nicolas Conte, the creator of the modern pencil, and wearer of the fashionable "Strappy-Patch"

just as a clarification: one [shy] member has inquired if their own character design, if proposed, would be redesigned, or just drawn as they designed them. It can be either, you decide!

How many suggestions may we sumbit for this jammy pac? Because I have the feeling that for something like this, many of us could probably suggest an endless stream of ideas before it gets repetitive...
but then, we will be doing less of these per year, so we should have a way to cap it...
or maybe we could run three at a time! (It's conceivable- pick your fav, then in the remainder of the month try and work on the others)

In my life I have made approximately, oh, two hundred characters, and I've always wanted to see as many as twenty of them drawn, colored, reinterpretted or reimagined by other people, can we keep this up until we're all senior citizens?

I've updated the instructions to include the posting of your progress sketches, since that's always so cool to see...

OK y'all, we're approaching the next round of random subject selection. Now's a good time to email or PM me with any proposed jam subjects, to be added to the pot.

They can be:

1. Redesign an existing character
2. Submit your own drawn character for reinterpretation Submit your own
3. drawn character for non-redesigned illuatration (same look)
4. Submit your character description for interpretation Propose alternate universe versions/mixtures, con-fusions/reimaginings of established characters ("what if Wolverine was a ninja robot!") etc

no limit to the number of entries you can request, so throw something in if you haven't already!

In the interest of beginning the consolidation process of the now-very-substantiallly-complex R3 Forum, I'm merging the jams into a single place. The R3 Designer Jam will continue to occur alongside the weekly This Week jam, but in the same place.

In addition, I'm refining the focus of this jam. I get a lot of feedback on the costume redesigns done for various jams and projects, and I want to push this in that direction a bit. All subject matter remains open, but let's get some more suggested names for the pot!

Anyone who has a moment, send me a list of three characters from comics, film, TV or whatever that you want to see redesigned! They can be mainstream properties, or you can even propose creator-owned stuff like TRDL characters or those some of you have created.

Send these via PM or email, but don't post here!
T

While having the jams together in one place doesn't rub me in any way one or the other, it would be kind of cool to add something like "This Week" to the front of the current jam or something. For some reason having all of them kind of "jammed" in together is confusing to me...

As is posting a new Weekly subject early, that really confused me. Jerk.

good idea. The current jams are, you know, stickied but i'll identify them as This Week and Designer Jams to make it easier. And part of the objective in merging all jams to one location (all general audience jams) is to remind you there are more than one. Like the Snake-Eyes Designer Jam, for instance, is running concurrent with the This Week Jam...
