This was one of several illustartions done by request for Advanced Iron #64, the oldest Iron Man fanzine, currently published on the web. This rendering was done to accompany an article on the Elseworlds project Superman: Red Son. I was asked to create an Iron Man from another nation (presumably with a national brand identity, more like national heroes like Captain America or Union Jack) so I jumped at the opportunity. I've drawn scores of other-nationality versions of popular franchise characters. It's a blast. I was half way through this design , as a Soviet armored character, when I realized that Crimson Dynamo made that redundant. So I stepped back and went for the best Communist branding out there: China! It's a striking aesthetic, and I tried to make the armor both industrial, and technologically powerful in appearance. Plus, who doesn't like the idea of an armored character swinging a seven-hundred pound warhammer around?
