This series of X-Men illustrations began as a commission sketch, and developed into a sketch series for the entire team, as designed by Frank Quitely for New X-Men during his run with Grant Morrison. Once I saw the m in a preview, I thought these redeasigns were awesome, and couldn't wait to draw them... and prompltly filed the source material away and never got to it.
Angel's redesign was presented in a preview as drawn by Ethan Van Sciver (I think) and I have to tell you, I don't know if he was the designer or what, but it makes no sense. Those yellow flex cable thingies everywhere were described as being for the purposes of allowing recuees to have handles to hold onto while he flew them to safety... now, Angel has often been described as a very profiscient fighter. Going into battle. With an E-Z-Grip Kill Me suit?!? On top of that, the notes on the costume referred to an aborted design that originally included an energy bazooka. While I like the idea of Angel picking people off from 200ft, how does that work with five housewives and infants strung along his costume? I like drawing wings though...
