Anisoptera is Mila Saleen, a former test pilot for ARFL [Advanced Robotics Flight Laboratory] in Perth, Australia. She was involved in a series of experimental 'buoyant energy' harnesses the consortium developed, each more sophisticated than the last. The final version of the technology had been the most stable, allowing high degrees of agility, speed and acceleration over sustained periods of use, and when wearing a special flight suit made of sensory-mesh, the operator became able to control the harness through nervous system inter-connections rather than the joystick articulators of the previous designs. This was to allow the wearer to hold equipment, weaponry, or perform tasks in mid-flight. While the technology was originally intended for law enforcement and emergency service applications, the project was stalled after it became clear, for an undetermined reason, that Saleen was the only pilot to be able to control the harness for any length of time without suffering severe nervous system disruption. During her longest and most ambitious test flight, Saleen was spotted by witnesses in a private helicoptor tour, after she had unintentionally exited the restricted airspace of the ARFL facility. Once handicam footage of Saleen, in her colorful flight suit, hovering fifty feet above the treeline, surfaced in the press, it became clear to ARFL Public Relations advisors that the project's potential in a PR capacity exceeded the likely possibility of bringing the flight suit design to market, and an agreement was reached with the Australian government, establishing Saleen as a Public Safety and Special Task liason wit the public, becoming one of the country's first sanctioned posthumans. She later joined Gaia, a team of powered individuals working on a global level, frequently returning to Australia as the need might arise.
