I had never really drawn Batgirl before this commission sketch request. I wasn't really into the character growing up, having had my fill of her from the TV show that almost ruined comics for me, then some silly, fluff comic appearances in 70s DC comics, and then her latter day appearance as puffy Alicia Silverstone waddled around in latex and tried not to look like she just ate a powdered donut. But last year a wonderful mini-series was published by DC called Batgirl: Year One and I have to tell you, get thee to a comic vendor and buy the trade, because it was fun, subtle, and a clever blend of retro nostalgia and art design and contemporary attitudes and character development. I loved it. So I was happy as a clam to do the piece. The client originally wanted a costume design loosely based on a hybrid between pre-crippling Barbara Gordon, the new black latex Batgirl, and a Catholic School uniform. That's the best I can describe the description I got. I asked if I could give them a retro Batgirl just to try out, no obligation, and they liked it, fortunately. I have to admit, though, I still may draw that other version... sounds kinda kinky.
