This was done for Roadkill's This-Week Jam, a weekly exercise where participating artists draw a character chosen at random at the beginning of the week, from a pool of previously submitted ideas from the members as a group.
When I titled this character "Captain Marvel" I had no idea it was be such a sticking point for some of the folks on the forums. When I last read an Avangers book with her in it, she was Captain Marvel. I remember reading somewhere that she was later gallavanting around space as Photon, but it didn't register for me in my experience, so I named her as I new her. I never much cared for her in the Avengers. She read as "token black hero no.7" (which is mentioned once and awhile by contemporary Avengers scribes, like Triathalon and Black Panther I think both calling the team on their lack of diversity offset by having one or two token ethnic characters in the otherwise white bread group.) But I read some of the character backstory on her, and she had a neat background. I think, had she been handled differently, and perhaps given a different look, she could have been an interesting solo character.
I did, however, give her dreads, because I couldn't, in good conscience, give her that fro that they designed for her...
