| BACKGROUND:
Libertine is the leader of Liberty Group, a nationally funded organization meant to capitalize on the emerging popularity of powered, uniformed posthumans in the TRDL universe at a time when there were only a scattered few making their way into the public eye (having roots in subversive, covert work until the secret was leaked...but that's another story.) Anyway, the Liberty Group is somewhere between good and evil in the traditional superhero comic sense... they purport to be good, representing American interests domestically and abroad, taking orders from the President's Special Projects Initiative, a council of three advisors to the President and the woman herself, appearing to do good works and assist civilians suffering from natural disasters, global terrorism, revolutionary conflict, etc. but in fact carrying a secret agenda of exercising American foreign policy and global industry interests for a cabal of private industry players who have influence in the S.P.I.
Libertine, after whom the group is named, has a public persona and aesthetic meant to represent not necessarily American freedoms, but American nationalistic power. The costume has grays and red tones, which combine nostalgic military imagery (battleship gray) with an aggressive, striking color to draw attention in press photos. Her private persona, despite a healthy degree of cynacism for the propoaganda machine at work behind the group, is one of extreme ideology. She truly believes in American superpower leadership on a global scale. This makes her, in my opinion, even more dangerous than other more opportunistic members of the group who are in it for more selfish reasons. Within days of the first globally-publicized disaster relief effort The Liberty Group performed, Libertine was hammered in the press over the unfortunate double-entendre in her codename: while meant to evoke freedom and democracy, ie. free thinking, the other meaning fo the term, of course, inplies freedom from sexual mores and morality. Given Libertine's chilly and confident public personality, this bacame a PR disaster as a scandal was fabricated by opposition groups, suggesting the woman symbolized not only the physical presence and political power of the American government, but it's long-tradition of moral hypocrisy and sexual scandal. Though internally, the S.P.I. and it's liason team to The Liberty Group were planning on arranging for Libertine's reignation and replacemnt, a greater, deeper scandal would emerge with a lesser-publicized team member, that would lead to one of Liberty Group's first genuine posthuman conflicts, and effectively superceding media interest in Libertine's private life...for the moment.
