This was done for Roadkill's This-Week Jam, a weekly exercise where participating artists draw a character chosen at random at the beginning of the week, from a pool of previously submitted ideas from the members as a group.

The subject this week was Kitty Pryde, specifically the Ultimate X-Men version of the character. Unfortunately, by the time I stopped following the title, she had only been introduced as a freckled teenager in urban hipster khakis. Apparently others in the group were equally out of touch, because the jam was soon expanded to include any version of the character. I chose to show the early days of Kitty Pryde's first discovery of a unique identity and look for herself, after wearing either X-Men uniforms or randoem ridiculous homemade kits for years in the pages of Uncanny. When they gave her the blue tights and the codename Shadowcat, it may not have been a stroke of genius, but at least she was given an identity of her own that reflected hermaturity and growth as a character, which in turn maybe reflected that same growth in readers of her equivalent age, for she was intended as a cipher of the readership, a real-person narrator for the book. Plus, you know, once they started mucking about with John Romita Jr.'s classic Nimrod character design (ie. pink, chrome, angular, random energy, mean posture) and mutated him into Master Mold or whatever, the character lost steam. Sure, back in the day he was inanely powerful, omniscient, unstoppable, undefined in terms of powers, abilities and limits of knwledge, effectively immortal and god-level...in other words, a Chris Claremont villain... but man, I've never had a chance to draw him before, so I gave it a shot.
