Tapiriit Ayilik's family have lived in a remote, mountanous reagion of northern Greenland for generations, members of one of several Inuit tribes that refused to assimilate with modern culture in the region. While on a foraging expedition, she discovered a herd of Caribou behaving erratically, confused and disorganized with no herd leader, with several able-bodied animals staggering off the surrounding steep ravine cliffs. After reporting the location of the herd to her tribe's hunters for slaughter, she returned and stumbled across a partially uncovered ice cave, formed from avalanche snows from earlier in the season. Within, she discovered a mysterious, silken gauze-like material of surprising resilience, half-buried in the cave walls, surrounded by the bones of multiple forms of local terrestrial mammals. Sensing the material's seemingly alien origin and ominous portent, she retrieved it and returned to her village in hopes of hiding it for later trade. Within days, her family members who had examined the material on her return, began to suffer mental disorder and eventually were driven insane. She quickly fled the village, as the tribe elders conferred privately in preparation to order her banishment or murder as necessary to protect the tribe from her evil mysticism. She was 14 years of age.

By her late teens, Ayilik fully understood the properties of her secret parcel, and had been using it to commit escalating crimes throughout the frontier towns of the lower valley, and eventually fell in with the criminal underworld of Nuuk, slowly developing fighting and survival skills appropriate for the modern society her family had avoided throughout her life. By the time she crossed over to Canada and eventually the United States, she had developed an affinity for the rapier and crafted her memory fabric into a combat cloak, and joined the villanous Cabal upon invitation.
