TRDL 2013 Series, No. 48 – Rocket Red [TRDL Redesign]

This one was done for the TRDL Art Jam, the subject being the number three. Now, that’s my favorite number and it’s used in my company name and branding, and is littered throughout my work, a anyone familiar with my stuff well knows. I decided to focus on characters with numbers in their designs, specifically numbered units, like robots, guards, armors… then I remembered Rocket Red, from Justice League International. That particular soldier wasn’t Red #3, and there never really WAS one in the books as far as I can tell, but there were several Rocket Red guardsmen. I did this redesign, thinking about some of the imagery I took away from those books, now what, decades later… the predominant use of glossy red and white, the visor and optical lens bar, the fusing of fingers together, the general stockiness, and of course the (at the time) Soviet branding. In this redesign, I expressed the finger fusion as an interlocking system that allows them to brace together and support a battering ram plate, and I kept a glossy red paint, with a small amount of white accent, but left the rest in grays/metal. I gave it a hammer and sickle as a nod both to the Soviet-era roots of the design, as well as to my own character in the TRDL Universe: Lenin’s Hammer, who wears essentially the same belt/buckle type armor bits. I also played with proportions, which is something I like to do with powered armor: even when they are humanoid, there’s no reason they have to be human proportions… a takeaway from both Shirow’s design work and iconic designs like the Aliens Powerloader. So I have extended the length of the forearms, such that he can have a longer reach, he can brace himself into the ground to protect the injured under him from falling debris, and can use the arms/hands/ram plates as a bulldozer-type shovel. There are no weapons expressed in this design: it is assumed to be a passive rescue and response unit.
