TRDL 2013 Series, No. 57 – The Space Phantom

This one was done for the TRDL Art Jam, the subject being the 2013 Vlad Fiks Memorial Jam. I chose to step away from the noir genre pieces i’ve done for the last few years and this time focus on another aspect of my friendship with Vlad that I valued: our mutual love for golden and silver age comics characters, the more obscure the better. He always loved when I drew classic characters, especially as the number of us that remember them are dwindling in the face of decades of more contemporary continuity, retconning, and redesigns. I was always drawn to Space Phantom in the old Marvel Handbooks, and used him in a few Marvel RPG game campaigns against the players. It wasn’t his powers that interested me, but rather his weird-ass visual design. I played around with it a bit in my version, exaggerating the proportions of his face, getting the same sort of galactic-Lorre thing with the eyes but with different hair, facial texture, and mouth. I kept the purple bodysuit but went in more of an abstract astronaut direction rather than the 70’s powersuit he originally wore. Miss you Vlad, every day…
