TRDL 2012 Series No. 45 - Batman Begins

I drew the Batman Begins era Batman design twice, prior to the seminal film's release: the first was my concept based on the mere description of the suit in the trades, and the second, above, was after the early photos supporting the film were released. I remember at the time feeling like the suit felt stiff and encumbered; not in the way the previous Batman film designs did, with the weird rubbery artifice (a factor of costume material limitations of the day) but in the way a soldier with heavy tactical armor looks... and so it was, in the film, that he WAS wearing tactical prototype armor, and it worked. I liked that he finally got a helmet and neck armor that allowed him to turn his head. It was never very graceful in execution, particularly the cowl, in the first film. The helmet felt small and rounded, the mouth opening oddly framed, and the black smudge paint around the eyes just further reminding you how much he needs those classic eye slits. But it was so much more than we ever had until that time. It was further refined in Dark Knight Rises especially, and while the Batman V Superman version donned by Ben Affleck later became the definitive film Batman design, I'm still fond of the Nolanverse designs.
