TRDL 2011 Series No. 31 - Scandal Savage [TRDL Cryptohistorical Redesign]

I approached this one as a TRDL Cryptohistorical Redesign, where I place contemporary comic properties in alternate old timey settings for the redesign exercise. This time, I was designing based on continuity I already established in a previous redesign. Last time, I redesigned the immortal conqueror Vandal Savage, snapshotting him in East London in 1903 recently fitted with giant steam-gear driven mechanical arm prosthetics.

This redesign has a foot in that world’s start-from-scratch redesign language and the other in mainstream continuity. I tried to make her recognizable as the Scandal from the comics, in the form of a dark bodysuit, the use of forearm-mounted blades, and metal elements on the costume. I tethered the design to my Cryptohistorical Redesign of her father, by forging much of the metal in her costume FROM his arms. My vision is that he raised a daughter to be his protege, who, unlike the comics, defeated him and took on his mantle and the name Vandal. The metal detail in her costume is bolted together strips of bronze from his arms, and the fold-out blade assembly on each arm incorporates some parts from his gear, repurposed to hold the blades to the rist, allow the butterfly knife flip action, and then yield a knuckle-guard. She wears a tight, dark bodysuit, though I did away with some of the strange design cues of the mainstream version, including the awkward facemask and the bare midriff cut. I located this design in 1963, figuring that was about as far back as we could go and have that body suit work… sort of evoking 60s catsuits I suppose. Lastly, she wears a sculpted relief image of her dead mother on a choker.
