TRDL 2011 Series, No. 37 – Operation: Zip Jet [TRDL Cryptohistoical Redesign]
This was done for the now defunct R-R-RedesignWeekly group on dA, the subject being a redesign of the golden age Nazi-fighting duo Rocketman / Rocketgirl.
I approached this one as a TRDL Cryptohistorical Redesign, though there’s not much of a time jump going on here, but rather just a period-era redesign and reinterpretation of the concept. Rocketman and Rocketgirl, scientist and girlfriend, wore custom ‘three cartridge rocket packs’ and donned yellow spandex to fight the Nazi menace. Later, some of their appearances were reprinted, and they were given the name ‘the Zip Jets’. My inspiration here was to militarize the concept of WWII-era jetpack soldiers, but from a civilian perspective. No US Army or Air Force gear here, all either sourced from survivalist or industrial protection gear, or custom designed, as in the helmets and jetpacks. The helmets have noticeable loudspeakers and breathing apparatus, and the suit is leathers with leather-wrapped steel plating sewn into them. The jetpacks have been given a control rod that includes a universal joint for steering, a throttle and a brake, all to allow for one-handed operation, freeing up the other hand for weapon use.
