TRDL 2012 Series No. 7 - Xartherian Warmonger [Commission]

This commission was done for a longtime client, for one of his original character concepts. These are my favorite kinds of commissions, because the client has some references or ideas, but hasn't really nailed it down, so I can work with that and pull something interesting together that later gives them inspiration to proceed with their project. I find multi-armed humanoids fascinating to draw because of the inherent challenge of working out all those rotator cuffs. On creatures that stand on multiple limbs you can rationalize the joint as pushing up and away towards the back, but bipedal humanoids have the vertical stack of the spine and musculature for the torso. There's some hand-waving going on here, but at least I'm thinking about it! Some artists just draw phantom limbs floating back there somewhere and call it done. This was done for Al Hobbie, a writer and small press creator.
