TRDL Update - 12 January 2017
The new year is off to a good start! Well, I'm including the last week of December for science, as the time off from work, while offering very little free time to work on art projects, did allow me to clear the decks and renew my focus, and plan for the new year's goals.
What better way to be productive than to write about being productive instead of actually producing, right! Onward!
1. Remainder of Tribute Art back catalog: I have pushed through several hundred pieces of art from my portfolio into the 11x17 art print format, but I still have a few hundred to go, including several that require art updating or adjustments. I'm working through this portion of the back catalog slowly, in between other things. If I get confirmation of convention spots in the first three or four months of the year I will accelerate this timetable somewhat.
2. TRDL Original Universe Sourcebooks: I've talked about this several times on the Robot-Kraken Podcast and here on the site, but I've returned to the mothership: the main drive for Third Rail Design Lab has always been the development and publication of this worldbuilding material, suitable for readers, gamers, artists, etc and based loosely on the format of the old Marvel Handbooks. The first edition of the TRDL Sourcebook (1.0) was a single volume with about 70 pages plus some sequential art. The new version will span several books, and there are an obscene amount of unpublished, new characters and teams to be revealed. Quite fortunate to have so much done already, set aside when my second child was born due to time issues; on the other hand, so much to do, both art and story. But this is now the next project in the queue, now that the Tribute Art book and both Wrongrobot books have been published.
3. Conventions: So far the conventions for me this year are Rose City Comic Con in Portland, and San Francisco Comic Con in SF, both in September. I have a number that I haven't heard back from, but more announcements on that front as they become available.
4. Robot-Kraken Podcast: You may or may not be already listening to this, but Kris of Deeply Dapper and I record a podcast about standard nerd stuff, with an emphasis on our art and con experiences. This was a semi-weekly broadcast in 2016, until the holiday season smashed our free time, so for 2017 we are doing the releases monthly, with an aim to broadcast longer, multi-hour sessions compiled from recordings made throughout the month. The first, Episode 027 (January 2017) features us discussing this change, as well as our art gains and losses in the fall season, and a discussion about Rogue One that competes with the film itself in terms of running time. HA! You can check the recording out on iTunes now. Tomorrow I will have the youtube video up as well, which will be a new option for 2017. I'll post on that separately.
Here's to a productive, creative 2017!
