TRDL 2013 Series No. 8, 15, 20, and 26 - Battle Royale 4 Ft. Iron Man

This series of four illustrations is a bit of an odd duck. I participated in a series of design challenges through a web forum, in which each participant brought a character to the competition, and competitors were bracketed to battle each other, where each battle involved both artists drawing a version of their respective characters fighting. The victor was judged based on a combination of art merit, relative popularity of the characters themselves, and viewer interest in the design challenge. I brought Iron Man to this battle, and it was my third participation in this championship. Below, the four illustrations that led me to victory! I chose to use a different Iron Man armor variant in each one.

The first round pitted my Iron Man (Marvel Now armor) vs. the fabled Medusa from myth. I designed a supervillain based on the Medusa imagery, and framed the battle as fantasy cover art from Invincible Iron Man, my favorite book as a kid. Custom covers are tough business for fan art! Made me nostalgic, though.

The second round of brackets pitted me against an artist that brought Raven from the Teen Titans cartoon series to the battle. I was excited because I hadn't yet had the chance to draw this version of Raven, and I paired her with one of my favorite armors as a kid, the Silver Centurion.

Round 3 pitted Iron Man (this time in the classic armor seen through most of the 70s and 80s) against Conner from the Assassin's Creed videogame series. Armor vs. arrows. I went with a pretty old school 'damsel in distress' theme on this pic, playing up the cheesy dialog and such for golden and silver age books, though in fairness, I haven't done so very often. The background was fun, and frankly this armor is a good challenge because of the armored muscles situation.

And the final round, which was a three way battle between the top three competitors remaining in the brackets. I brought the Mark II armor to bear (ole Hornhead, as it were) and my competitors brought Flatman from the Great Lakes Avengers, and Beauty and the Beast, respectively. What to do, what to do... roll up Flatman and pummel Beast with him into submission, of course. Truly random business. Still cracks me up, though. Making Stark drunk (with cartoon style 'intoxication bubbles') and having him mistake Beauty for Pepper Potts was pretty fun. I do blame the economy, though. I know voters appreciated the fact that both Beast and Flatman had face damage.

Anyway, you can get any or all of these as collectible parody prints through the links below!
