TRDL 2018 Series No. 35 - Slave Leia

The Slave Leia is one of the most infamous images in Star Wars. The reaction to it is pretty contextual, and continues to be a mixed bag for fans, I think. On the one hand, when Return of the Jedi came out, I was young enough to take it at face value: Jabba the Hutt imprisoned her, chained her up in a humiliating outfit like all of his dancers, and kept her close as a trophy. I remember clearly being aware that this was a setback for Leia, but that she was the one who weaponized her own predicament and strangled her captor herself, NOT waiting for rescue by one or the other of her male suitor heroes. In the modern era, it’s definitely more complicated: I see a ton of Slave Leia cosplay at shows, but many customers who are far more interested in Leia in the snow jumper. I think there’s room for all of it. I will say this look is very hard to draw. Deceptively so.
